BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand reported 187 new coronavirus cases and two deaths on Monday, bringing the overall number of cases to 13,687 and fatalities to 75 since it detected its first case a year ago.

 

The tally included 10 imported cases, the country's COVID-19 taskforce said.

Today, 116 people were found through proactive case finding. These were in Samut Sakhon (113), Bangkok (2) and Rayong (1). Other 61 cases were in Samut Sakhon (35), Bangkok (20), Samut Songkhram (3), Rayong (1) and Samut Prakan (2)

187 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths reported

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Monday reported two deaths and 187 new cases, including 10 people who had travelled from abroad, in the past 24 hours.

 

Of the new cases, 61 were exposed to the virus while visiting high-risk areas. The province with the highest number of infections was Samut Sakhon (35), followed by Bangkok (20) and Rayong (5).

 

Proactive testing led to the discovery of 116 cases -- 104 foreigners and 9 Thais in Samut Sakhon, two Myanmar nationals in Bangkok and a Thai in Rayong.

 

Of the overseas travellers who tested positive in quarantine, seven are Thai nationals returning from the United Kingdom (5), and one each from Malaysia and Bahrain. Also testing positive were a British man, a Russian woman and a German man who flew in from their respective nations.

 

A female bedridden patient, 56, succumbed to the virus on January 21 after a cardiac arrest. She was the first death in Samut Songkhram province linked to Covid-19. The patient had epilepsy and stroke. On January 21, she felt suffocation and was taken to Somdet Phra Phutthaloetla Hospital. She was put on a ventilator but succumbed. Two high-risk close contacts who lived in the same house have tested positive. One of the two is her husband who had once travelled to Samut Sakhon.

 

A British man, 61, passed away on January 24. He arrived on December 25, developed symptoms on December 28 and the positive result was confirmed on December 29. He reportedly avoided a ventilator until it became difficult for him to breathe on January 9.

 

Meanwhile, 95 patients have recovered and been discharged.

 

As of Monday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 13,687. Of these, 11,313 contracted the virus domestically, including 4,684 who were found via proactive testing, and 2,374 are returnees. So far, 10,662 have recovered and been discharged, 2,950 patients are still in hospital and the death toll has risen to 75.

 

According to Worldometer, as of 10am on Monday, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 99.77 million (increasing by 455,867), 73.9 million have recovered, 25.88 million are active cases (110,510 in severe condition) and 2.14 million have died (up by 9,511).

 

Thailand ranks 125th on the global list of most cases. The US tops the list with 25.7 million, followed by India 10.67 million, Brazil 8.84 million, Russia 3.71 million and the United Kingdom 3.64 million.

 

Apisamai Srirangsan, CCSA, assistant spokeswoman, said the number of cases in Bangkok had increased to 700 since December 15. She said a new cluster had been found from the cases of a superspreader who joined DJ Matoom’s birthday party.

 

Total cases in Samut Sakhon had risen to 5,480 cases.

 

Medical teams from other provinces, including from the military, will join active case-finding operation.

 

She hinted at some 800 new cases being reported on Monday afternoon.

Wonder if he was returning to his home here, and his family, so sad really, RIP.  I wonder why they waited for the ventilator, unless he was adamant not to have one.  Sure hope Covid goes home and stays there, but it won't be soon enough for some.

Gentlemen - I think given the quality of Thai Journalism we can counclude that all newspaper reports no matter how contradictory are both equally truthful and false and that the public should not question the written word.

I was wondering if he may have been infected on the flight as he would have had a negative test before being allowed to board the flight.

Possibly, also a probability being that he caught the virus while in a quarantine hotel, New Zealands first case in weeks was as a result of that.

Provinces have their own health authorities that report local results. These are later merged with national results which  leads to confusing reports from the media and occasional lags.

 

There are databases online that list each and every positive case in Thailand from January 8, 2020 including exact location, time of testing and other info like nationality.

I heard on the news that the PM has approved the purchase of vaccines by private hospitals, as long as they've been approved for use in Thailand.

Given that there's going to be a tidy sum of money to be made selling them to us farangs, I'm hopeful they'll get moving and start offering the vaccines soon.

Certainly possible, the test 72 hrs prior to departure can't prevent infected people getting on a plane. If you were exposed within 3 days prior to the test or in the 72 hours afterwards, the test might not see the infection. ASQ is the only barrier to stop cases from entering the country.

 

I think they don't bother testing Thai because they can't forbid their return. But they should test them to lower exposure to others on the plane.

Whatever happened to the 148 COVID-19 cases from Samut Sakhorn reported on Sunday evening.....it seems to have conveniently/deliberately disappeared from today's total.....giving public an image that the cases in Thailand is on the low side or seems to be flattening....what is the purpose?

113 +other 61 cases were in Samut Sakhon is what makes it confusing, it makes it seem as if 174 just the way its worded and with the numbers.

It seems the "second wave" outbreak has been successfully contained and there is no exponential spread. As cases continue to spread elsewhere and lockdowns are being tightened and extended, it looks like things may be relaxed in Thailand by early next month.

There were over 900 new daily case a month ago when the Samut Prakhan outbreak started...after a week or so of similar daily numbers, new cases have quickly declined to the 200-300 range (or lower). The virus never took off and spread exponentially.

Update: They are saying that they will test around 10,000 a day in Samut Sakhon and the 800 number could be found on Mon afternoon or the following days. This is what happens when you mass test and quite honestly shows the previous numbers were bogus. Let's see what the numbers are this wk.

The guy is a friend of a manager of an LK Metro bar. He travelled from Manchester. The taxi driver on the way to the airport tested positive later. Not saying that's how he contracted it but highly probable.
