Thailand looks poised to confirm its first official “super spreader” as fears grow over the scale of the latest cluster infection

The hashtag #DJ Matoom is top-trending on Twitter after the recent celebrity birthday party of Techin “DJ Matoom” Ploypetch on the rooftop of a five-star Bangkok hotel became “super-spreader event”.

One party-goer broke his 14-day self-isolation period and spread COVID-19 to other revellers. So far, the party has spawned at least 19 other new COVID-19 cases.

“Transmissions in Bangkok should be highlighted. They show the possibility of a person becoming a super-spreader,” said Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesperson Dr Apisamai Srirangsan during the daily briefing on Monday.

Bangkok needs to mass test like Samut Sakhon. SS now doing 10,000 tests a day. Over 900 found in one day although mostly foriegn workers. Still over 100 Thais in a day is significant. Wonder what the numbers in BKK would show with mass testing.

Its long since been endemic to thailand imo. I cant see how its possible that they had millions of chinese tourists until late march, and covid not be widespread. Thais seems to be largely resistant to the worst effects of the virus somehow.

Believe it is because the DJ posted it himself, but they must be afraid of the defamation law here in Thailand as it might get them sued.  So much for the safety of people...

Other news outlets (Thai and English) reporting...

The DJ celebrated his birthday at the Banyan Tree hotel in Sathorn, Bangkok, on 9 January.

And those 19 to how many others?

Nice work to the man.

I must admit I find it hard to keep up with so many threads.

From what I have read on TV I thought that the virus didn't spread Thai > Thai.

I guess I got that wrong then.

But only spread by famous people or those inside casinos or pubs. It doesn't seem to spread among the general public. Magic.

Well you could read the news, they are not afraid of the defamation laws, it was named widely days ago, you just made that all up.

Banyan Tree Hotel on Sathon Road.

So will I be hit with these deflation laws now? Nah.
How about all the TV stations, radio stations and newspapers that have constantly named it and everyone else involved?  Nah.

It is a bit hard to protect the safety of the people as you say if some people out there don’t follow the news and just make up their own fake stories.

Places such as restaurants that he and others visited have been closed since last Friday because of this.
He visited Grammy, 300+ tests were done on the entire staff.

Needing to do and the ability to do are two different concepts. Thailand does not have the resources to undertake large scale testing because; It does not have the volume of reliable testing kits or trained personnel necessary to do so.

No. No.  and No.

The Chinese infected came from one region. At the time Thailand was awash with Chinese, most were from uninfected regions.  Yes, Thailand had infections but it was lucky because of the time of the year when it had occurred. There is a seasonal aspect to the pandemic. If we look at the EU and  North America, they had a brief respite during their summer period. Now they are suffering winter impact. Thailand had the arrival of 1st wave   at start of hot season when respiratory diseases are less likely to spread. Because Thailand used tough effective measures to to keep foreign infected people out it has delayed the spread. USA, EU, and North America had bad  strategy and now pay the price. Thais are no more resistant to Covid infection than farang. Obesity not as bad, so immune system not as weakened as fat people countries.

I think you make some fair points, but Wuhan had plenty of tourists, and Thais, going back and forth. Wuhan is popular place for Thais to go when buying goods wholesale for sale back in Thailand. So, that part is factually incorrect. Its not just Thailand, but all SE asian countries have had very little impact from this virus, and all have alot of connections with China. It dosn't make sense otherwise. Heat could well play a major factor, as you say, but hard to see how that explains everything.

You misread, as always.  It was not the DJ or the hotel I was refeering to but the un-named party super spreader that had been in Chiang Mai.  Give it a rest.

Gotta love how they name the DJ, but don't name the "party-goer" or the hotel.

Party goer name and hotel name widely reported since last week.
No cover up, no defamation laws used.
Keep trying.

FWIW, I was referring the the article on which the OP here was based.

Who, what, when, where, why - the basics. Without these, any sort of "news" is pretty much useless.

Yes, I was able to find the hotel name in other publications.

I still haven't found the name of the "party-goer".

I can't imagine being an editor here. The pressure to mask everything must be immense, but then the Publisher must make the close calls re: angering the PtB.

Opinion: DJ Matoom and the fiasco surrounding him is everything that is wrong with Thailand

In Thailand, the case of DJ Matoom is everything that is wrong with modern day Thailand and emblematic of the rot at the heart of our society.

This might sound a bit harsh but over the past decade Thai society has devolved into what it is today, a society which values celebrity-hood over logic or reason, a society where the wealthy and famous can flaunt rules and get away with it with little repercussions.
