Health insurance

I have been with Aetna (previously called Bupa) since 1999. I have been renewing the same plan since then, which Platinum 5 IPD only. I never really had much health issue since 1999 and so no personal issues with Aetna. Within my close contacts, my sister and my ex-wife both are also with Aetna on the same plan as me and both had serious health issues during the last few years and I could see that Aetna handle very well the coverage and any issues related.

I am getting older...now and of course the premiun is increasing accordingly...

I just turned 53 last month and the renewal of my Aetna policy will 71,000b in coming April.

I would like now before I just proceed the renewal to hear if there are better alternative considering my age and my need in term of coverage. Here is what I have:

IPD only. I am not interested about OPD

Up to 5,000,000 THB per injury or disabilties (*Maximum benefit for an injury or sickness per disability** means inpatient hospitalization (room and board including fees for nursing services, hospital general expenses, surgeon’s fees, physician’s hospital visit and specialist’s consultation fee).)

up to 12,000b / day for room coverage excluding treatment (full cover)

up to 16,000b / day for ICU covergae excluding treatment (full cover)

emergency OPD treatment up to 20,000b

Personal accident: 100,000b

Worldwide coverage (except USA)

No advance payment for hospital in network

It also work for the new Covid-19 insurance requirement (100,000USD). I used it during my trip few month ago to Vietnam and it was accepted without discussion.

I also understand that the oldest you get, the more difficult it is to be accepted by insurance. So it might be wise to stick with Aetna but your advises would appreciate.

Thanks

Oh and does anyone know how do thais cover themselves when they turn to wrinkled raisins?

Any Thai citizen can register and seek treatment at government hospitals for free or nearly so. Those who worked in the formal sector can maintain cover in retirement through the social security scheme for very modest premiums. The very wealthy just pay out of pocket. The issue of old age and lack of commercial insurance options is mostly a problem for foreigners, especially those whose extensions of stay require proof of insurance. For those older foreigners whose extension does not require insurance, it may be an option to register at a government hospital and set aside funds for medical care. Government hospitals are much less expensive than private ones and the care is good, although wait times can be long and the ambience is a bit industrial.

My premium dropped by nearly half when i opted for a high excess, This was 50 000b. At the time I figured that i really only needed insurance for something really serious that was going to cost the earth and my agent advised this. Any smaller bills, like 'as an out patient' for example, I would cover myself.... This has saved me loads over the years...................Consider asking an/your insurance agent............

This is a very prudent approach. There is no point in simply trading baht or dollars with your insurer for minor things. Save your premium money for real risk transfer. Take a high deductible if you can absorb the day-to-day costs of medical care.

...........and you also wouldn't lose your 'no claims bonus' if there is such a thing in the health insurance industry
