Reports published in the Thai media from Pattaya earlier in the week that Walking Street was deserted may have been true but it is certainly not the case in other expat hangouts in the resort.

 

Thaivisa saw a backlash yesterday from many Pattayans who said that the coverage was too negative and in reality many people were getting out now that the bars were open again after the second wave of Covid came to an end.

 

Many said that Walking Street was lacking in customers but it had been going downhill anyway before the pandemic.

 

Besides, they said, Walking Street is far more tourist orientated and the real action goes on at Soi Bua Khao and Soi LK Metro.

Popular expat blogger "Dan About Thailand" had also suggested that things were not all bad.

 

As if to reflect these criticisms yesterday reporters from We Love Pattaya (Rao Rak Pattaya) went to Soi Bua Khao and reported much better news on Facebook.

 

At 10.30 pm on Tuesday the place was heaving with what they called foreign tourists still in Thailand - by this they meant the foreign expat community.

Most of the bars were not just open but doing a thriving trade as a "great many" patrons swilled their drinks glad that they could enjoy an evening out again after the doom and gloom of the Red Zone lockdown last month.

 

The media said it was "especially busy" because Walking Street was undergoing the repairs and refurbishment (associated with the cable burying there).

 

They reported a busy soi where the Covid protocols were being followed.

I am glad you said "When" the tourists come.

 

Firstly they have to get some sort of visa and all the other travel documents required. Next they need to find an airline that is flying between Thailand and their home country, not forgetting the 14 or 15 days of quarantine on arrival.

 

Then they need to run the gauntlet of arrival in Thailand then off to their ASQ for a couple of weeks at their own expense. If they have any time and money left after that (and they still have holidays left) they can enjoy Pattaya for the rest of their holidays. There won't be a lot for them to do or see because (as I understand it from TVF) not many bars, massage  parlours etc will be open as many seem to have shut down completely and dismissed their staff.

 

On their return to the home country (if they can get in) they will face 14 days quarantine.

 

So they need to be the boss at least just to get 6 weeks holiday. The workers can also take 6 weeks holiday but are unlikely to find their job waiting for them on their return.

 

IMHO Pattaya wont pick up until (perhaps) Q4 this year or sometime next year.

 

This is not the Doomsday Clan speaking, it is simply the truth which you can accept or reject as you wish.

I'd agree with this.  Venues that are geared to target tourists are dead.  Those who have realised that the expat is their main customer - and who don't try to rip them off - are doing at least OK, and some better than OK. 

 

There is a misconception that expats are all singlet-and-stained-shorts wearers seeking the cheapest beer, and there is some of that.  But there are also a lot of moneyed expats who are here because they like it here, not because they've run out of other options.

 

There is fun to be had still.

Add to this the fact that most of the regular would-be tourists have been unemployed for a year (bosses too) so it will take another full year after reentering the work force before even thinking about taking a vacation.

Maybe the rich, retired "expatayians" will keep 10-12 bars afloat for another year.

the problem is the question of volume,

 

if the city was still medium sized, with the same bars as 2005/2006, then it could recover easily

 

but number of bars has exploded, the city has quadrupled in size since 2005, it's impossible to sustain a recovery with so much "weight" and "gravity" in play. The bigger they are, the bigger the fall.

I do have a Mayday. over the last seven years i actually have five friends with the name May and I have nick names for all of them. My first friend I just called May. Her name changed from Phone to May as I got to know her and finally to her real name which is something completely different but I can't say because Hua Hin is a really small town. Then there is May 2.0. Every word out of her mouth was a lie from the first text to the last time I saw her three years later. She was incredible. I miss her a lot sometimes. Then May The Machine in Bangkok. then May Milk (self explanatory) and Mayday. Mayday is a Aries and sort of mentally unstable and was always trying to impregnate herself with me.

Who reports that there is a lot of action in Soi Buakhao, LK Metro, Tree Town and Made in Thailand is simply lying. I live in Central Pattaya. Most bars if not closed are empty. The sex and booze tourist obviously don't want to enjoy quarantine or don't have the money for it. I think it is a great idea to get finally rid of them - the bars and these "tourists" . Pattaya has no future if it wants to continue to play the role of the perhaps biggest open air brothel in the world. It is embarrassing for normal or luxury tourists to say they go there for holidays. Or what would you think if I tell you that I will spend my holidays in the red light district St. Pauli in Hamburg? And compared to the red light areas in Pattaya this is a very small area...
