webfact 82,703
Crackdown on motorcyclists and cars using the sidewalk earns BMA 40 million baht Picture: Nae Na Deputy governor of Bangkok Sakontee Pattiyakun gave Naew Na details of the crackdown on use of the sidewalk by motorists and motorcycles. The campaign to stop parking and travelling on the footpaths and return them to pedestrians was started in earnest in July 2018. Up until the end of last month well over 30,000 people had been fined across the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority's fifty districts and nearly 4,000 warnings had been issued. Total fines collected had now busted through the 40 million baht barrier with a total of 40,570,509 collected. Top of the list was the Wattana area (that includes downtown Asoke intersection and its surroundings) resulted in 4,472 offences netting the BMA 6.7 million baht. Twelve other districts garnered more than a million baht in fines - Wang Thong Lang, Bangkapi, Bangkok Noi, Huay Khwang, Chatujak, Khannayao, Bang Khae, Bang Khen, Lad Prao, Bang Sue, Phasi Charoen and Din Daeng. The BMA is also cracking down on the use of roads to store and place things in an effort to improve traffic flow, said the deputy governor. expat_4_life 275
The 40 millions baht sounds impressive, but is it? Let's do the math. July2018 thru Dec2020 about 900 days. In Wattana they collected 4472 fines total 6.7 million = 5 per day at 1500 baht each. "The crackdown" only nets 5 violations per day (7500 Baht) in Wattana, Doesn't sound like much of a crackdown or money earner. Are they even really trying?
