Well lets be honest here. I have found in my life time up to now that the HUGE majority of people use religion when it suits them. Its not something anyone adheres too. Its just how it is. Thailand is no different. I know quite a few that went and did the Monk process and once completed, they are back to doing the same stuff that they did before.  

 

Religion is a personal thing and to each their own. I do not follow any. I was baptized catholic but put it aside years ago.

What the Mexican woman did was wrong because she sexualized a religious icon. It is no different than defiling  religious imagery and symbols of the Christian faith. The Mexican government would have been up in arms if she had posed lustfully with  a larger than life size religious icon of the Church of Rome. 

You're certainly right about the earlier cultural norms but I would suggest that the image posted by Phuketshrew is in fact a religious image depicting an Apsara.

You ought to go to the Facebook site and read the comments from the Thai people. There is very little outrage, in fact virtually none. The most is that a contestant in a beauty contest should have done a bit more homework about the culture first as it is not just about beauty but brains too.
