(Reuters) - Tiger Woods' car accident cast a shadow over the World Golf Championships (WGC) event in Bradenton, Florida, on Wednesday, as the players prepared for the tournament.

Fifteen-time major winner Woods was awake and responsive on Wednesday after a car crash the previous day in Los Angeles in which he suffered "multiple leg injuries," according to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to stabilize compound fractures of his tibia and fibula.

The horrific accident stunned the world of professional sport, with some commentators speculating as to whether it could end the career of the greatest golfer of his generation.

Prominent sporting figures -- as well as former U.S. Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama -- sent their well-wishes.

"It's a terrible situation, you never want anything bad to happen to people," said world number one Dustin Johnson, who found out about the accident while playing on the back nine of the Concession Golf Club. "Obviously (I) hope for a speedy recovery."

Fourth-ranked Xander Schauffele told reporters he practised with a "sombre" group on the putting green on Tuesday, and was working to stay focused ahead of the first round on Thursday.

"It's kind of strange to share the same idol as everyone else out here, but we all do for a good reason," said the 27-year-old American. "He is the reason a lot of us are playing golf and the reason a lot of us do what we do."

Woods, an 82-time PGA Tour winner, had hoped to compete in the upcoming Masters, the site of his epic career comeback, where he broke an 11-year major drought in 2019 after undergoing numerous surgeries.

"There's so much speculation right now, and I hate speculating, but I would really hate to see that if he wouldn't be able to play golf again," said Schauffele. "He's had some incredible comebacks and I think this would be, by far, the most epic comeback if he was able to come back and play golf again."

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy said he was grateful that Woods' injuries were not life-threatening.

"It was really bad, he's very fortunate to be here," said McIlroy.

The 31-year-old from Northern Ireland, who will be grouped with 2017 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and American Max Homa in Thursday's opening round, said the players would remain focused on the competition.

"Of course we're all going to play a golf tournament and seem no different," said McIlroy. "It's obviously going to take a bunch of attention away from this golf tournament, but that's nothing to do with us."

Why do these overpaid prima donnas command so much air time when they have accidents due to their own actions ? Much is being said about whether his leg injuries will impact his golfing future. But who really cares ?  I and millions others certainly dont' and guess his ex-wife will think perhaps it is just karma.  Just hope he does not go the way of OJ Simpson,  another prima donna who could not live up to his success.

How is he overpaid?! He makes the organizers millions and millions of dollars, therefore he’s more than entitled to get his fair share. Nothing wrong with that!

He’s famous therefore it will be reported! That’s just the way it is!

There’s lots of people who care whether he’s gonna play again and just because you don’t doesn’t mean that rest of the world doesn’t either! You’re opinion is not the world standard when it comes other people! And to compare him to Simpson ist just absolutely class- and tasteless. Also, are you completely free of any sins? Guess not!

You sound like a jealous hater!

No he don´t sound like a hater. I would say realist. let´s just face it. Tiger is not best, or even in the top ten to win. Therefore there will be no shadow. Just play on guys. 🙂

This dude had like 100 hookers, ruined marriage, kids without a dad full-time (maybe, not sure), and there was talk he was on the juice.

BUT he wins..........and when you win you will be forgiven.

and now he has about 900 zillion dollars

the real question is.....would you want to be him.

no

Right! He might not be the best right now, but he will definitely go down as the best ever or at the very least as one of the best! Name one other guy in golf who is as famous as Woods and by that I mean to the general public. Woods is pretty much the only golfer who is a household name!
