This comes after a budget meeting chaired by the new Royal Thai Armed forces chief Gen Chalermpol Srisawat. He wants to see a reduction in army generals of 5-10%. This will mainly be accomplished by not replacing the generals when they retire. He also wants greater efficiency and the scrapping of unnecessary departments and operations. Also at the meeting were the other leaders of the military forces including RTP chief Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk, air force chief ACM Airbull Suttiwan and navy supremo Adm Chatchai Sriworakhan. The army chief had a stand-in at the meeting. Gen Chalermpol who took up the post of commander-in-chief last October declared then that the military should engage in no more coups and stay out of politics. This despite the fact that joint chiefs are part of the senate. Online information suggests that the Thai military is massively top heavy with generals. There is one general for every 212 serving men and a total of 1,700 in the armed forces. According to wikipedia this makes the top brass bloated for a military of its size. Planning the coup since 2010, appears Prayut was planning a coup from the day he got the job of army chief. I think it would be much more than 50%, more like 75% given the current number of generals is 1700.For comparison Wiki states that for the United States the total number of active duty general officers is capped at 231 for the Army, 62 for the Marine Corps, 198 for the Air Force, and 162 for the Navy. As to your comment about battle situations I'm not sure that's relevant since the purpose of the Thai army, the country having no enemies or even potential threats, is primarily to be involved in business for its senior officer corps. 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
