BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand kicked off its COVID-19 inoculation campaign on Sunday, with cabinet ministers, health officials and medical professionals among the first in the queue to receive vaccinations.

The first doses of vaccine, developed by China's Sinovac Biotech, were given to Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who is also the health minister, among others at an infectious diseases institute on the outskirts of Bangkok.

"I hope that the vaccination will result in people being safe from the spread of COVID-19 and it allows Thailand to return to normalcy as soon as possible," Anutin told reporters afterwards.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, 66, attended the event, although his age falls outside the range of 18 to 59 suitable to receive SinoVac's CoronaVac vaccine, so he did not get it.

Thailand received its first 200,000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine from China and 117,00 imported doses of AstraZeneca's vaccine this week.

CoronaVac has been distributed to 13 high-risk provinces, which will start injecting front-line health professionals and volunteers on Sunday, the health ministry has said.

AstraZeneca's vaccine will be ready for use by the second week of March, after going through quality control tests, the company said in a statement.

Thailand is expected to take delivery of a further 1.8 million doses of CoronaVac in March and April.

A mass campaign to administer 10 million doses a month is set to begin in June, with 61 million shots of AstraZeneca vaccines produced by local firm Siam Bioscience.

With a tally of just over 25,000 infections, Thailand has escaped the kind of fallout suffered by some other countries since the pandemic began last year.

Health Minister Anutin becomes the first Thai to be given COVID-19 vaccination

Anutin-vaccine-2.jpg

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul became the first Thai to be inoculated with the Sinovac vaccine on Sunday morning, at the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Disease Institute.

The inoculation was administered by virologist Dr. Yong Poovorawan and witnessed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, whose scheduled injection today was postponed indefinitely due to an administrative problem related to the AstraZeneca vaccine from Britain.

Agriculture Minister Chalermchai Sri-on, Deputy Public Health Minister Satit Pitutacha, Culture Minister Itthiphol Khunpluem and Deputy Education Minister Kanokwan Vilawan, Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrachit and Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Disease Control Department and several other health officials were among the first group to be inoculated.

"Administrative problem related to the AstraZeneca vaccine from Britain" - the bureaucratic paper trail stops absolutely NOWHERE; I am sure the Brits screwed it up again which resulted in the inability to inject any of the British stuff into Anutin - remember the "dirty farang" comment a year ago; assume he referred then already to the vaccine ????

The proximity in which this guy anutin is in charge of running the country is alarming to say the least !

Since the watch borrower has taken a back seat slightly , anutin has got more and more closer to prayut to the point it’s blatantly obvious he wants his job !

Chinese expansionism!

It came from the AstraZeneca Manufacturing plant in South Korea. Politicians would like to administer the shots straight away, however the have to conform the the ISO quality control procedures.

Only yesterday the PM said vaccinations would be delayed as the wrong envelope had been delivered with the vaccine. Opps sorry letter! Today up and away. How do this Government communicate ? everyday contradictions  and miss information.

You should pay attention. The PM did not say that the vaccinations would be delayed in the hot spots like Samutsakhon, 70,000 doses are being administered there. The PM was due to get the AZ vaccine which came from the new AZ manufacturing plant in South Korea, the problem is that they are awaiting some data on the safety for over 65's, which is the same reason that Germany is awaiting clearance from their Scottish vaccinations of over 65's.

Anutin is democratically elected and from a different party to Prayut Who didn’t even run in the last election and thus DIDNT receive a single vote. Same with the watch borrower.

Anutin wants the job, makes no secret of it. He ran for it. In the 2019 Thai general election, he was the Bhumjaithai Party's candidate for prime minister.

He doesn’t love Prayut. If Thanatorn or Peau Thai won he would have joined them. He was previously a minister under Abbhisit.

Cha Cha bailed on the AZ vaccine NOT Sinovac

Not strictly correct, he said he would take the Sinovac vaccine first then bailed after he was told it was not cleared for his age group. Hence then going for the AZ vaccine which as we all now know is delayed for a couple of weeks.

Just get the Pfizer and Modena vaccine approved. If I am going to get a jab, at least make it a "good" one.

They are nowhere close to being ready for mass distribution. Americans will get their orders filled by mid summer. Next are all the high income countries that preordered. I don’t expect it ready for shipment to others until 2022.

Lots of pomp and fanfare and photo-ops but you have no idea what is actually in the syringe.  Saline for all we know.  Do I trust these high-profile propaganda campaigns.  No.

And we have yet another new Covid conspiracy theory.
