HappyinNE
I have traveled from Nong Khai to Bangkok and back many times. The trains always started exactly on time. About four years ago they fixed up the scheduling and the arrival time is now usually within 20 minutes or on time. Before it was usually four hours late. In fact one time it did not make it even to Udon Thani and we took a van from out in the country to Nong Khai. They just eliminated the first class from Nong Khai to Bangkok and you can only get tickets three days before the trip. So this time I am flying. The old sleeper was a great trip.

Raybangkok
I can remember when this was proposed under a previous government that a shopping mall would be built at all stations to help reduce the losses that would be incurred.
