webfact
BANGKOK, March 16 (TNA) - The Department of Special Investigation has investigated a case in which 255 aliens allegedly had fake Thai identities in Wiang Kaen district of Chiang Rai and some of them ran illicit business. DSI director-general Korawat Panprapakorn ordered his officials to seek relevant information from the Department of Provincial Administration for the investigation. One of the suspects was identified as Thai man Apao Saesoen. Evidence showed that after receiving Thai citizenship, the man opened a company to do the business that is actually reserved for Thais. DSI believed the illegal violation might affect national security. Popular Post tgw
the original story linked in the OP goes on to say "The investigation already caused the Wiang Kaen district office to revoke Thai ID cards earlier issued for 50 aliens, seven of whom did illicit business." there is some serious loss in this translation I think... how can fake citizenships be "revoked" by a district office if these citizenships weren't granted in the first place? EDIT: this story makes much more sense:https://www.thephuketnews.com/chinese-faker-ran-illegal-businesses-worth-billions-79360.php Edited March 16, 2021 by tgw 5

Popular Post Dogmatix
Poorly written story. These were presumably Chinese nationals who had not been naturalised as Thais but had been sold ID cards by corrupt district office officials which happens all the time. Why does the DSI not mention how they acquired the ID cards and what action is being taken against the corrupt officials that issued them? Surely these corrupt officials are the real threat to national security but the DSI goes out of its way to protect corrupt officials. 12 6

One day Thailand might actually open up like the rest of the world and realise that foreigners can bring benefits to a country, more than just tourism, but then again it seems to like the "Thai only approach" to employment. 9

Popular Post SupermarineS6B
Yes, yes, we're all Thai, but some are more Thai than others........ This is getting like the latter days of the Nazi party when each little Himmler was trying to out do the next. The nasty bit about all this though is that anyone with a "Slightly undesireable" background..... Farang, border dweller, "Alien Worker " can be booted out without a second thought....... This is basically licenced xenophobia with the usual hefty spoonful of paranoi.......... And this is the country you want to retire in ? Popular Post SchuetzRob
Not much wrong with capturing the illegal aliens. But: where and by whom did they receive the fake id? Shouldn't this be the main objective? 5

Nanaplaza666
The same people getting them their fake ID's are now kicking them out because they are doing business better then them . First they bended over backwords to get them in to invest money in the country , now they grew bigger then they expected they have to call a halt to it. Who else thinks there are much more chinese given fake ID's to buy whole condo buildings and property just to allow them to bring their money here . Now this has come out i hope the news hasn't reached china yet because they will be more carefull in the future where to invest . Everything is thai first here and that will kick them in the face at the end . 2

Iron Tongue
I don't think "fake ID" is the correct term. Article seems to imply that they bought legitimate, govt-issued documentation issued by corrupt civil servants. As the linked article said, Thailand had to go through the trouble of revoking this guy's Thai citizenship.

Some are more Thai than the others ???? Many of my friends went for Thai citizenship to circumvent these ridiculous laws stipulated in the „Alien Business Law“ which says, that tourism, architecture and farming are for Thais only. The „better“ stuff on said list includes ice carving and hair dressing; quite clearly a „Thai only“ affair. It explains, in part, the poor workmanship, the inefficiency, the outdated technology on how certain things are done here. Take banking as an example. Banks are still printing pass books by the ton; for someone with 40+ bank transactions a day you can imagine, that you just forget about new passbooks as they‘ve been abolished two generations ago in Europe. The same industry - banking - can to this day not tell you, from where the money comes which is credited onto your account (Bangkok Bank) and have you ever tried to transfer USD 100 out of the country by telebanking? As said, seriously behind the 21st century because there is no push by the banks which would change the apparent laws by the Bank of Thailand and/or the Ministry of Finance. 1
Antifreeze
How are Thais supposed to improve your their skills if knowledgeable foreigners cannot own a business and show how to perform a particular task? Right now foreigners cannot be majority owners in businesses and cannot perform specific tasks.

skippybangkok
When you go to buy property at the land dept, very often they also want to see the certificate issued by the police for naturalisation. For obvious reasons they don’t trust Khet offices which shoe the ID cards Edited March 17, 2021 by skippybangkok
