As the name suggests, walking football is a slower version of the beautiful game.

It is designed to give people who may not be able to play regular football the chance to continue playing the game they love.

The non-contact, low-impact version of the game has proved extremely popular in the UK and is aimed at those who would perhaps consider themselves in the ‘twilight’ of their football careers!

Walking football enables players, typically those aged over 50, to participate in a group activity and keep fit.

As well as the health benefits, walking football also offers many social benefits, with players able to meet new people, avoid becoming isolated, and interact with individuals and small groups.

It really is a game suitable for anyone - regardless of age or fitness levels.

And now walking football is being introduced to Thailand.

British expat and local radio DJ, Steve Johnston, is bringing the game to Hua Hin, with a taster session and introduction to the game to be held at True Arena Hua Hin Sports Club this Sunday 21st March at 11am. The free session is open to men and women aged 50 and over.

Steve hopes to get the game established in Hua Hin, with weekly meetups and matches, before rolling it out nationwide.

Steve even has the backing of ex-Spurs and England defender Gary Stevens, who lives locally and is in full support of the initiative.

“Walking football is really about bringing people together and having fun”, Steve said.

“It gives older people, like myself, the opportunity to not only enjoy playing football again but also meet new people and socialise with others.

“The social element is just as much part of the experience as playing football”, Steve added.

Anyone interested in trying walking football should attend the free taster session at True Area in Hua Hin this  coming Sunday at 11am.
