Koh Samui: Return to foreign tourism begins with "Samui Wonderland" pilot in July

The district chief of Koh Samui island in the south of Thailand told a meeting that foreign tourism would start to return in July.

 

July 1st  the "D-Day" for a scheme called "Samui Wonderland" and businessmen who have been vaccinated will be the first guinea pigs.

Their movements will be restricted to hotels at first then they will be able to travel outside their rooms and the hotel areas. 

 

The "Samui Sealed Route Model" plans include direct movement from airport to hotel then restricted movement including islands nearby like Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, reported TNN.

 

After a couple of weeks tourists could travel further afield.

 

Theerapong Chuaychu, the district chief, hosted a large group of tourism delegates at Theprat Witthaya School in Mae Nam, reported Manager. 

 

The pilot program - earlier said to welcome people from Singapore on direct flights to the island - has a ten point plan.

 

These include detailed assessments and plans on preparedness, PR, arrival and movement of tourists and tracking. 

 

Theerapong said that he was determined to make sure that everything goes without a hitch as this was an important step in the rehabilitation of Samui and the other islands post pandemic. 

 

Thaivisa notes that this is just a pilot to test readiness. A wider opening of Thailand will not likely occur until the beginning of October at the earliest.

 

And that is dependent on the Covid-19 situation between now and then and factors such as the vaccine rollout in the country and abroad.

 

It should be noted that in the Manager article the potential tourists were referred to as "business people".

I feel like this hardly differs from the upcoming changes to inoculated travelers and the decreased ASQ requirements... every province needs their own cheerleading session or what?

Even at a couple of weeks, most tourists only have a couple or three weeks holiday, so they ain't going to go where they are restricted to the hotel for most of the holiday.
