Tragedy struck on Tuesday when a group of boys went to play an after school game of football on a pitch in front of municipal offices in Khian Sa district of Surat Thani in the south of Thailand.

There was heavy rain and after some lightning strikes nearby some of the boys took shelter.

Others kept playing then there was a direct hit on the middle of the soaked pitch.

Krissanaphon Jansri, 12, was killed and five friends were taken to hospital injured.

PPTV36 reported a sad scene at the Yaowaret Withaya school next day as the children gathered to say a tearful farewell to the boy.

The condition of the injured has improved and checks on their hearts revealed normal rhythm though they were being kept under watch before being allowed to go home.

The media said that the pitch was an open area with goalposts surrounded by small trees.

They said this should serve as a warning to parents and children about what to do when there is lightning and storms.

You'd think common sense would have dictated they'd seek shelter.. alas loss of life was the result of not having any.

Yes....get inside.

I wonder if the locals know that sheltering under a tree is a bad idea ?

  • Lightning can a blow a tree out by creating enough steam in its core for it to blow up, which is another reason for you to not seek shelter under a tree during a thunderstorm (Unless you want to take your chances on being blasted into oblivion by flying tree shrapnel.)
