I live a fairly extravagant life, but would struggle to spend 200,000 a month - without giving loads away.

Love how all of their tourist scams are all directed at "wealthy foreigners", in the hopes that a million "wealthy foreigners" will spend more than 10 million "2 week millionaires" (and 20 million "zero dollar" Chinese tourists that Thailand seems to love so much).

You'd think we were living in Monte Carlo from the sounds of it !

There are already many retired expats who spend upwards of 1.2 million a year here, myself included. And certainly many more who are working in international companies. It isn't an unreasonable or unusual target.

 

However making it easier to buy houses is interesting. My guess is that if this is introduced it will be something along the lines of:

 

- The property must be above xx million baht

- It must be in the following locations

- It must be from 'this' list of Govt approved developers

 

If I'm right, in other words it will be a scheme to enrich certain companies/people first and foremost and not something designed to help expats!

There is no problem in buying any property in Thailand - so it cannot be made easier! What we want to know is can we OWN  what we buy? The word "own" or becoming an owner with rights same, same as Thai, has been studiously left floating!

The plan Sounds like : Rich foreigners the easy visa procedure and freehold ownership  of a house with landplot. Less rich foreigners the complicated visa procedure and  ownership of house and landplot is a max 30 years leasehold.

Wouldnt touch it with a 10' pole.  If I buy any property in Thailand Ill only do it in my wifes name and consider the money spent and done.  Companies, leases etc... are all subject to sentiment changes and money grabs.

They keep talking on and on about how they want to target rich people. Ok. It is a good market. But, how do you attract them? What are you willing to do, to attract them? What sacrifices are the ministers willing to make, to get them? Both rich tourists and ex-pats are fussy about the details. Are they being considered?

 

Rich tourists like to spend money when they travel. And they cannot do that here, as they do not like getting taken for a ride. Most wealthy people are smart with their money. Thailand could be making a fortune on a 25% luxury tax. Instead of the 100% or more, which discourages most people from buying. How many people do you see in the luxury stores here? They are almost always completely empty. Inane. Beyond inane. I have had many rich friends tell me they will not return to Thailand, as their wives do not like shopping here. They feel everything luxurious or imported is way over priced. What are the lame authorities doing about that dilemma?

Some regressive nimwits do not understand basic economics. By reducing taxes you stimulate the economy. In addition, if Thailand reduces its punitive wine taxes and luxury taxes, they might be able to attract more of those rich tourists they keep droning on and on and on about. The rich are smart with their money. And not only do they enjoy a nice bottle of wine with dinner, their wives also love to spend alot of money on luxury goods while they vacation. Impossible here. Who would buy a Prada handbag for $11,700 here, when you can get it for $4,800 in most world capitals? Same goes for wine. Who would spend $700 for a bottle of wine they could get for $125 at home.

It is referred to as self sabotage, or idiotic policy. An extreme lack of creativity forces retrograde politicians to become overly dependent on import taxes. Dumb and dumber. Plus, are they addressing critical issues, like the air and water quality, traffic safety, public transportation on the southern islands, rapid rail transport, and the lack of law enforcement?
