Brits support Thailand’s plan to open up to vaccinated tourists

British nationals have indicated they support the Thai government’s plan to re-open to vaccinated tourists from 1 July.

 

A straw poll by The Independent news site showed that respondents were overwhelmingly in favour of the plans.

 

The poll, which was conducted on Twitter by the Independent’s Travel Correspondent, Simon Calder, attracted 3,000 responses in two hours, with 62 percent voting in favour.

 

The majority of those voting in favour of the ‘no jab, no entry’ policy were aged over 50, the Independent reported.

 

However, the under-50s were less supportive of the plans, and despite 753 approving, 606 voted against.

 

The news comes as the Thai Cabinet on Tuesday formally approved its four stage plan to re-open the country.

 

The first stage of the plan will see quarantine cut from 14 to 10 days for all arrivals from today (1 April).

 

Fully vaccinated tourists only need to quarantine for 7 days.  

 

From 1 July, vaccinated tourists will be able to visit Phuket without the need to quarantine.

 

If the scheme in Phuket proves successful, quarantine will be scrapped in other popular tourist destinations throughout Thailand, namely Chiang Mai, Krabi, Pattaya, Phang Na and Koh Samui from 1 October. 

 

Thailand then plans to lift all quarantine requirements for foreign tourists next year.

Bit of a stretch of the imagination to come up with the idea that the results of a 2 hour poll on twitter by an unknown journalist somehow comprises the thoughts of British nationals.

Its twitter - it is international.

About the only conclusion you can draw is that some people on twitter think its a good idea and some others think its not. Doesn't make a very snappy headline though...

I would not call 62% overwhelming...in fact, I would have guessed the response would be 80-90% in such random survey, responded to by people that only want to see things open and travel.

Simon Calder is arguably the UK's best known travel writer who often appears on tv when an expert is required. Either you are not from the UK or you don't read the travel news.

My understanding is that the policy is NOT no jab, no entry.

 

The policy is, not vaccinated, 10 days quarantine, vaccinated greater than 14 days prior to travel with an approved vaccine means you quarantine 7 days.

is thai visa getting so hard up for news that they are inventing it now?

The problem is atm even if you get the jab currently you only have a 3 month window to get here and after that if you leave then your back to at least 10 days quarantine. So realistically unless you live here or plan on staying long term your only going to have one shot at a no quarantine entry unless things change substantially.

The other problem they have is insisting the 2nd dose is administered withing 14 days of travel. Not going to happen unless you are extremely lucky. 

I just find it amazing that they can continually put problems in the way. Wait until the science has more facts regarding the length of time the vacine works. There's non at the moment.

Surely you mean that the second dose must be at least 14 days before you arrive?

That's how long it takes for you to be considered fully-inoculated. Arriving at any point after that means you are as safe as you can be, so, understandable that they would insist on that.

New announcement on Monday. By the time the quarantine is lifted it will be all systems go for the Brits.........unless Boris decided to put Thailand on the red zone of course.

Per Sky News, Philipinnes added to UK's red list today. One competitor not jumping ahead of Thailand.

Both Pakistan and India who had done very well in recent months with controlling the virus are blaming british visitors for the new second wave - in particular importing the new strain. 

 

Many living in the UK hold Indian passports and are travelling back and forth at will.
