An expert in infectious diseases in children has expressed her concern that more children are catching COVID-19 from family members, while the COVID-19 vaccines for children are still under development.

Dr. Warunee Punpanich Vandepitte, of the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, said that 40 infected children received treatment in hospitals last year, compared to this year, when 10 infected children were admitted to hospitals between January and March, so it is likely that the numbers will increase.

Most of the infected children are aged between 5 and 11 years. They can develop severe symptoms, while the treatment is more complicated than that for adults.

An age range data chart would be nice for all age ranges.  Would make it easy to see the progression as long as there was actual testing and clinical findings here in Thailand to support a transparent process.  MOPH please unlock your data base so we can obtain stats like before. What are you hiding?

The message from this article seems to be that we have to protect children because children are more vulnerable to covid (the article states that, "They can develop severe symptoms, while the treatment is more complicated than that for adults"). But all data shows that kids are far less susceptible to the disease than adults. Not only in catching it, but in showing any symptoms at all. Unless the kid is particularly vulnerable due to some other health condition, then covid is not a threat at all.

Does the article really want to say that, "For the rare cases of immuno-compromised children, we have to be extra careful, because they are harder to treat"? I think it's a fair statement that we must protect particularly vulnerable kids, but if the point of the article is "we need to be more careful or else healthy children might get covid," then this article is absurd fear-mongering, and consistent with so much other ridiculous news on this pandemic.

Sure would like to see what data that 'severe' and 'complicated' is based, on as it flies in the face of just about every country's data and that from the WHO. And without pre-existing conditions, a micro % of deaths

It doesn’t say they are dying. It says they are getting infected and can have severe symptoms.

OK so show evidence of this in other countries where healthy children have severe symptoms that are less than say 0.001% of the child population ? Or are you saying that Thailand now has a covid variant that effects children more than any other country on the planet  ?

So your a hoax theorist and Covid denier, well done.  Just look at how the hospitals are now filling up here, are they all made up stories?  Try again

The hospitals are filling up with people testing positive, but not sick.  They have to change this policy pdq.

I'll buy that when I see a year's worth of global epidemiological data.
In the world of Covid, anyone with an MD or a billion dollars seems to be an "expert" now.  It sort of diminishes the meaning of the word.

I'm with you on that line of analysis. How many people are actually getting sick enough to need hospitalization? Going to "the hospital" and testing positive, is not the same as actually getting seriously ill; the number of "cases" is irrelevant, for the most part - if the numbers of life-threatening complications is as low as reported worldwide. It's almost as if getting a severe "cold" ( all "colds" are either rhino or corona virus, as far as every virology paper, that I can find states) It is more than likely that lockdowns and destruction of viable economies will 'kill' more, in the long run. One good friend of mine in the USA (72 years old)  tested positive, was congested for 3 days, recovered completely [some residual chest congestion as most experience] and a week later was vaccinated...He obviously didn't "need" a vaccination for the exact strain he just recovered from, so I suspect peer pressure from the medical community he works for.

Really not worth entertaining the numpty people, my friend.. There will always be those that balk at this or that. They are typically intellectually-challenged and should not be engaged, especially on adult stuff.

But, yes, horrible if it starts showing signs in the kids.

Not true.  This is being reported from many different countries.  In Brazil, they're having a real problem with younger people now getting sick.  That didn't happen last year, but is now.

https://services.aap.org/en/pages/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19-infections/children-and-covid-19-state-level-data-report/

As of April 1, nearly 3.47 million children have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic. After slight increases in cases over the past two weeks, new reported cases were similar to the prior week – about 64,000 new child cases.
