Police captain Wichai Meekhwan of the Talat Phlu police and Poh Teck Tung rescue foundation were called after a 70 year old woman driving with her 25 year old son went down a huge hole.

Daily News posed the question: Who is going to take responsibility?

They reported that it was underpass work on Rachada - Tha Phra road, by Soi 17 where there was a four meter wide, 50 meter long trench for burying electric cables.

It is construction being done by the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority, they said.

Fortunately the lady and her son were only slightly injured and turned down hospital treatment after being helped out of their Toyota Yaris.

The grannie explained that she had been out with her son to get food at the market and was returning home.

She saw workmen working but no sign as she went on the left.

She credited the fortunate wearing of seatbelts with their survival.

Captain Wichian took pictures and said he'd be handling compensation arrangements.

Outstanding !!! - was she following her satnav ? (the same as those who drive into the sea? [previous reports])

This takes a ’special kind of special’ - the area doesn’t look so poorly lit and she’s clearly ‘inside a road works area meant to keep people out !!! how did she get inside???

That said, road-works in Thailand are rarely illuminated effectively at night.

I recall driving Highway 12 (East from Phitsanulok), plenty of road works going on widening the road. Parts of the road were new, but just ended with a 1m drop off, there was the odd cone here and there and people would have to change lanes quite quickly back into the centre. Of course every morning on local news there were reports of the carnage as people had driven ‘off the road’ in in the pitch black at night time.

How nice of him, a police Captain handling compensation, what could possibly go wrong? and more to the point, under what authority allows him to get involved in payments?
