Astra Zeneca vaccine is largely ineffective against the new strains, figures vary from 10% to 21%  ????

I remember that for South African strain, which is why SA gave away 1 million AZ doses and switched to Johnson&Johnson... Didn't see the UK strain (which Cambodia strain is similar to) figures though... Could not be that bad, could it?

Imagine if the hospitals had enough tests and beds and were not turning away people...we would have the real number...

Imagine if we had enough skilled people to do track and trace on these 967 new cases, let alone the thousands over the last week...we would have the real number.

The system is now completely overwhelmed. They really have no choice but to enforce a lockdown...

It would be interesting to see some info. and data on when are test supplies arriving. And an explanation of why they have been allowed to get to almost finished.

I've heard it mentioned (ABC insiders) that the Jensen jab is experiencing similar problems.

So many <deleted> idiots talking rubbish. AZ is totally effective against UK strain and is the reason our cases are dropping so quickly

This is a chart the MoPH released the other day on the various vaccines and their effectiveness against various strains.

The chart, of course, doesn't say anything about a Cambodia strain. But presumably it bears some resemblance to the recognized UK strain.

PS - It's worth noting that almost all of the vaccines being administered in Thailand thus far and in the coming couple months are likely to be the Sinovac variety at the bottom of this chart.  The Thai government just got a new shipment of 1 million Sinovac doses yesterday that will soon begin to be distributed.

Thus far, Thailand has only approved 3 vaccines for domestic use -- Sinovac, AstraZeneca and J&J (the latter for which there has been no known imports into Thailand thus far).

Is this the shipment that a month or so ago the Chinese were saying was conditional, and required that Chinese be given priority for vaccination?

It's not strange. This time, the people that count have been vaccinated.

And in a self imposed quarantine so that they don't accidently get infected by one of the Songkran travelers who is out spreading the virus and having Sanook.  You can not even began to equate their actions on a personal level with their in-actions as far as running the country and lack of care shown to the lowly citizens.  I really feel sorry for the street level people.

The issue, right from day one, has not been the death rate, whether it is 2% or 0.5%,  the issue is the total number of people who are likely to catch the virus, due to it being novel.

as you point out, a death rate of 0.5% is nothing to be scared of. But, and it is a big but, 0.5% of the total population is a huge number of people.

Unless ????????????

They started testing more than 1% of the population.

Dunno about the conditional part. But as I already posted above, the govt. just got a new shipment of 1 million Sinovac doses yesterday that will take some time to be checked before it gets into their distribution system.  And I believe they're expecting another 500,000 Sinovac doses in another month of so.

But the reality is, perhaps unfortunately, thus far, they're pinning the vast majority of their vaccine plan nationally on their own locally produced AstraZeneca vaccine that's supposed to start coming online sometime June or thereafter.

Unfortunately it comes down to a lack of true transparency and a lack of testing is how, and really that's all that can be said. This new variant is stronger and travels quicker infecting people faster and making people show symptoms where before who know what symptoms folks may have had.  Once they started testing the Hi-So's and ministers because of someone becoming ill and going to a hospital the true s. show started as you can now see.  Many of us have stated in the past that unless they test wide spread or en-mass you can not know the true numbers, but then many have also said why test if no one is going to the hospitals, beds are not full, and the bodies are not stacking up.  As you can see now testing does show the issue where a lack of testing is truly a lack of transparency, but I don't believe certain people really care.

Here's a direct comparison by an expert on AstraZeneca and Sinovac on combating the UK strain. Its not looking good for Sinovac.

Thailand vaccinations report thru yesterday, April 10

Total doses, number first shot, and number second shot:

It's worth noting, at least up until now, pretty much all those vaccinations have been for the government's various targeted groups, and not the general public.

The targeted groups include health care workers and first responders, people over 60, those with high-risk exposure, people with chronic diseases, and of course, government types.

AFAIK, unless something breaks loose from the private sector in the meantime, widespread public vaccination under the government's program with their own locally made AstraZeneca vaccine isn't slated to start until June or after.

Also worth noting that most of this is with sinovac, the cr@p one that the Chinese are giving away as its efficacy is just slightly over 50%.

Sorry I just can't believe that.    I would imagine 1000's related to the virus.

That's not 0.5% of the population! It is 0.5% of those already infected.

Yes, but because it is a novel virus the entire population is at risk of becoming infected. Hence the drastic measures taken by most governments to control the virus until a vaccine is distributed.

I think it's been decided the virus came from Cambodia while everyone was looking at Burma.

Talking of that, this just published:

CHINESE OFFICIALS SAY CHINESE VACCINES’ EFFECTIVENESS LOW

In a rare admission of the weakness of Chinese coronavirus vaccines, the country’s top disease control official says their effectiveness is low and the government is considering mixing them to give them a boost.
