If they tested positive, why aren't they in hospital?

No need to ask me. I can't get answers for things like that either. Seems that the five are all in the village across the highway from wife's village. That one is the "down market" village, so God knows what is happening to them. Originally, she told me the five were in her village. But now it's across the highway.

Thailand reports record COVID-19 cases ahead of national holiday

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand on Monday reported 985 new COVID-19 cases, a record daily jump for a second day in a row, as the country deals with a third wave of infections and a highly contagious variant.

Since the latest outbreak began at the start of April, 4,641 new domestic cases have been added in less than two weeks, bringing the total since last year to 33,610 cases and 97 deaths.

The spike comes ahead of the major national Songkran holidays, known for big street water fights that authorities have now banned for a second year due to the pandemic.

All but five new cases on Monday were local transmissions, including 137 in the capital Bangkok, the epicentre of an outbreak that has spread to most of Thailand's 77 provinces.

Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and reduce gatherings to help limit the outbreak, which includes the highly transmissible B.1.1.7 variant first identified in Britain.

"Although infections are spreading fast and found in many provinces across the country, they are mostly imported there," Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, told reporters.

"Please be careful and avoid crowded places especially during Songkran."

Nightspots such as pubs and karaoke bars in Bangkok and 40 provinces will be closed until April 23.

The measure should slow down infection rates by nearly a third in the next month, a senior health official said on Sunday, warning that otherwise under a worst-case scenario infections could hypothetically reach over 28,000 per day.

Around 570,000 vaccine doses had been administered from the end of February to April 11, authorities said on Monday, although still only reaching less than 1% of the population.

Last week, some hospitals in Bangkok said they had stopped testing for coronavirus over a lack of kits or bed capacity.

Authorities have said they were working to add more beds using field hospitals or hotel rooms to support a rising number of patients.

Thailand has nearly 20,000 beds available across the country, not including about 3,000 in Bangkok, authorities said.

Add these two TAT Ministers to the numbers.  The government folks seem to not be Covid free after getting vaccinated.

Wishing them a speedy recovery.

The numbers today should be higher but I think they are reflecting the hospitals running short on tests and the actual lab doing the checking of being overwhelmed much like the government who was caught off guard.

..Government Ministers, Border Officials all believe they are immune to all sorts of things...sadly the numbers are going to spiral until they aggressively vaccinate the population.

Official refutes woman’s claim her child was turned away by four hospitals

An official from one of the four hospitals that allegedly refused to treat a 10-months Covid patient on Sunday said on the Aggressive Doctor Facebook page that the hospital had done their duty in line with medical ethics.

The official said the parents had admitted to visiting an entertainment venue and department store in Hua Hin, adding they later deleted an earlier Facebook post on their trip.

“After the child tested positive, we contacted different hospitals that may have available beds, but the parents refused our offer,” she said.

Probably refused, because the kid wasn't sick! Yet another sensationalised story by the media.

Of the new cases, 980 were local transmissions, while 5 were imported from people entering quarantine.

so, if I understand correctly,  (they say 980 were local transmissions) that would mean the virus has been around, never left and was never under control as Prayut keeps saying.... liar, liar pants on fire   555

Thai Ministry of Public Health has a news release out today assuring that all THAIS who contract COVID will be treated for free at public or private hospitals and related facilities. No mention of non-Thais AFAICT...

Via Google Translate:

The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed that all Thai people infected with COVID-19 must be treated free of charge. Beds are available for both public and private hospitals and an additional Hospitel if the bed has not been detected.

...

Nationwide, beds are available to accommodate people with COVID 19, both from hospitals and clinics. 23,483 Field and Hospitel Hospitals are available, 18,257 beds are available for the whole Bangkok Metropolitan Region, there are 4,454 supporting beds available, 2,056 beds are available if they include Field and Hospitel beds that are in cooperation with the Department of Health Service Support and the private sector.

...

If the infection is detected at a private hospital, it will be treated at a private hospital first and there will be a Hospitel which is used in the hotel room as a hospital. There are parallel hospitals to care for patients who are asymptomatic or less symptomatic. And without complications, doctors and nurses regularly assess symptoms every day. If symptoms worsen will be sent to hospital immediately.

Thai PBS has a somewhat more coherent version of the above stats on bed space availability:

"Meanwhile, Dr. Somsak Akkasilp, director-general of the Medical Services Department, reassured the public that treatment of COVID-19 infection at public and private hospitals is free of charge.

He said that, outside Bangkok, there are now a total of 20,000 beds available  to accommodate COVID patients in hospitals while, in Bangkok, there are still about 2,000 vacant hospital beds.

There are also about 3,000 beds at field hospitals in Bangkok and another 3,900 beds in private hospitals or hotels, which have been modified into hospitals."

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has prohibited airlines from serving food and drinks to passengers on board planes flying domestic routes in order to curb the spread of COVID-19, with effect from April 13.

The order also covers eating and drinking of food or beverages brought by passengers. The ban will be in effect until the situation improves or a new regulation is announced.

The CAAT also has prohibited the distribution of newspapers, magazines or any pamphlets, except those related to safety, to minimize passengers touching surfaces that could spread the virus.

the biggest daily jump for a second day in a row,

The "jump" is in fact only 18! 967 yesterday, 985 today.  Yesterday's figures were a much bigger jump from 604 to 967, a difference of 364, which was probably the biggest jump recently!  Seems very convenient that it is difficult to get a test in many places, plus the fact that many of those who have "fled" Bangkok will probably not want to get tested for fear of getting hospitalised away from their homes and work!

I see that the Ministry of Public Health has decided to use some of the limited supply of Vaccine to innoculate Thai Airways staff!  What about the vulnerable sick and elderly people!  When will they stop propping up this ailing company and get their priorities right!  People before business!  At least it is only the ineffective Sinovac that they are using.

They don't seem to cross the 1,000 a day mark without a bit of flatlining first.

They ran out of tests at most locations again.  Going for a test is rather risky lining up with people coughing and sneezing.
