Pj2738
The types of foreign retirees targeted will be those who have a healthy pension pot, with the ability to spend 200,000 - 300,000 baht per month. That's about AUD$100,000 to AUD$150,000 per year. I doubt many Aussies could afford that in their own country. Age pensioners in Australia get about AUD$24,000 pa. Do the math. I also doubt if the elite rich Thais could even spend that amount in the land of smiles.
Popular Post Bday Prang
6 hours ago, zoltannyc said: Most people with a 10000USD monthly disposable income should be millionaires. According to the Barron's Word Wealth report there are 20 million millionaires in the world, and taking an average age distribution let's say around 15%-25% of them are at retirement age which leaves us with 3-5million potential customers. So to get 1million paying customers you would need to get 20-30% of all potential high income retirees to move here. (I tried a similar estimate based on household income data and I got around 4-6 million potential customers.) Lets not forget that the only millionaires that would even be forced to consider retiring here are those that are married to Thai women, and I seriously doubt there are a million of them. So for the figures to stack up they need to target all millionaires married to Thai women and achieve a greater than 100% success rate. Good luck with that. If they really want to increase the amount of foreigners staying here long term, all they need to do is relax the property ownership rules , and return immigration procedures to how they were back in the good old days. That shouldn't require too much thinking To be honest I don't mind them keeping us foreigners "at arms length" I wouldn't want Thailand to suffer the same fate as the UK. Lets not forget we all came here because its Thailand

So finally the long-stay foreigners who up to this point, we have been told, don't actually contribute to the Thai economy (because we don't pay income tax...like most Thais). However we do inject foreigner capital into the Thai economy and we pay a 7% VAT that is returned to tourists unlike us. So they finally are waking up to the fact that their tourism industry is probably never going to recover and that catering to long-stay expats who pump capital into the economy all year may actually be worth inducing to come and stay. But! I'll believe it when I see it. 6

Sumarianson
Too many restrictions to what is a right for Thai citizens who live in our countries along with permanent status after 10 years in the country or with family, regardless of marital status. The immigration policies of Thailand discriminate against other races. Something that should be unacceptable to any God loving nation. Depriving legal residents of their right to work and feed their family is more discrimination. If it were done to Thai citizens in another country ( who were singled out) there would be outcry! In Thailand however, not a word of protest is to be heard.

Pedanov
Yeah. And IF every person would send me a single dollar I'd be a billionaire. LOL How about selling FREELANCE VISA instead? Guess more people ready to work abroad with their families just buying visa instead of creating fake company with fake Thai partners and fake employees. One million retirees vs one million of geeks with high salaries. No doubt who wins.
Stargeezr
The Thai government is like most other governments in the world. It consists of rich people. Period, and do you usually see rich people who help anyone except other rich people. Not usually. I will not hold my breath to see if this news story is anything other than just more words. I am hoping that maybe the visa requirements and especially the 90 day reporting get a major revamp. I guess we will see if there is actually any intelligence within the government and TAT combined. I wish I were more optimistic. Geezer
