BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prime Minister has stressed the government is not trying to limit the choices of COVID-19 vaccine to be purchased and imported by private companies, stressing the process must follow protocols to ensure safety.

The Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha was addressing concerns regarding the speed and availability of Thailand’s vaccine rollout, with 666,210 shots given in 77 provinces out of the available 1,161,849 doses, as of 19th April.

The Prime Minister said the government has allowed the private sector to participate in the vaccination campaign, by setting up a committee to discuss more vaccine orders with private hospitals and related entities.

He said however the importation of vaccines is not an easy process, and manufacturers will have to seek regulatory approval from the government first.

Gen Prayut said the government is not restricting private vaccine deals, however all processes must comply with safety standards.

Thailand is counting on the delivery of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine produced by the local pharmaceutical company Siam Bioscience to start its mass vaccination campaign. The government is expecting the first 4-6 million doses from this manufacturer to be available in June, with all 61 million doses ordered by the government to arrive by the end of year.

The Prime MInister said that privately imported vaccines would help increase vaccine availability, while revealing the National Vaccine Institute is now in talks with Pfizer to potentially acquire 5-10 million doses of the mRNA vaccine between July and December this year.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul, said today that related agencies have already been in talks with Pfizer, however, like many other manufacturers, there are supply chain restraints which prevents the vaccines from being delivered to Thailand in a suitable time frame.

Mr Anutin said the mass vaccination campaign for the general public will start in June, while the Ministry of Public Health has set a target to inoculate 100% of medical workers this week.

I really worry that Thailand is setting  itself up for major catastrophe with counterfeit vaccines, in particular Moderna and  Pfizer. All production has been purchased until the end of the year. EU, Canada have agreements to purchase anything that  becomes available and they paid for it. The Moderna vaccines are on backorder because of QC issues. All this is reported on in many media. USA has already said it will give its excess vaccine to countries most in need  in Latin America and USA. India is in meltdown and cannot meet its Covax production requirements because it is diverting vaccine for its own health crisis. So this means that thailand will go shopping for whatever garbage is available from China and Russia.  Counterfeit  J&J, Moderna and Pfizer will show up in Thailand and idiots will rush to buy. There must be no private sector sales until pandemic is crushed.  The distribution of  ineffective China vaccine will help spread disease, not prevent.

but it's not the private sector for pfizer, but the government wants up to 10mln.

private has ordered sputnik for june, moderna for august and j&j for october (or delayed).

there is no chance they would be counterfeit - they get them directly from the producer.

It's just a matter of price they are going to pay to get it.

Private might be charging up to 15k baht ie $500 for 2 shots (quoted at hospital to one of the forum members about 10 days ago), so they have a large margin, even $100 per dose, from whoever wants to sell at that price.

chinese and russian vax (they have many each) are exported all over the world (including to europe) and are good enough

Liar Liar pants on fire!   The time line indicates something different!  All their cards are placed into the AZ being produced here.

Safety?  Approved?  it has been over two months since the other vaccine has submitted their data to be reviewed yet majority of the countries has been less than a month.

Delay approval allows the production of the AZ to catch up the story of private hospital allowed to purchased has been near six months the longer the delay allows the monopoly of one vaccine equals $$$$$$$$$$$????

Interesting that when he so chooses, he IS "The Government". He loves ordering everyone around.

But when things get dicey he shifts blame to (his) "government".

(Yes, I underrstand that there are liability issues, but the government needs to step up and back-stop those sorts of issues.)

So even at best his chosen supplier in Thailand can only achieve around half the population.

Axactly as another member said , he is shifting blame to the government . Every other dicision had to be signed by P.M but this one he leaves to the government . His lack of being sharp and ordering vaccines second quarter of last year for mass vaccination and thus being vaccinated already from last year till now is the biggest blame why this country cannot be openend up yet . All over europe people are allowed to go on holliday very soon around europe because most countries are quit far in the vaccination program . I think more and more people ar starting to wake up and see this guy is a total joke(if they havn't already) . Don't really know what to say about this pathetic peace of human being, other then he is to dumb to whipe his own .... (only luck he has is that in this country he will always find someone to do it for him )

What if.....

....Siam Bioscience decides this whole vaccine-making-business is way too hard, doesn’t deliver the advertised product, and just keeps the money?

Wonder what the fearless Hero-General would do then.

Ho ho ho.

Another thread said the local supply of AZ is not expected before July now, not June.

And there you have it. Waiting on Siam Bioscience to make and supply the majority.

And why can't they mention it's owned wholly by one person.  It obviously would be beneficial for there be more manufacturers in case theres a problem and to create some open market competition.

Heres the prices for some vaccines on the open market as of Sunday:

And there's your "red-tape" roadblock.  It must take a farang to be able to point that out.

Manufacturers whose vaccines are currently being used globally need to navigate a red-tape gauntlet before being able to be imported to Thailand.
That, Mr. Prayut, is called a road-block.

It's always been about this. Let's see if they can make July. As that's another month been added on. I'm betting on September

Having sat on a cheap fence for over a year whilst totalling the economy he now wants vaccines fast should have followed the UK instead of Dr google Yong. right now he is looking more stupid than a dead friend giving watches away and just as believable????

What ever it is in timing, the bulk will still go to Siam Bio. that is probably the most solid concrete decision there.
