Viral Interest in moving out of Thailand sparks debate and some backlash

The current interest among Thais in moving abroad, with nearly 763,000 members joining a newly created Facebook group and the Thai hashtag “Let’s Move Abroad” among top Twitter trends, has sparked much discussion, debate and backlash about the state of Thailand and love for one’s home country.

 

With countless posts asking for and sharing tips on life overseas on the “Let’s Move, Let’s Move Our Hips,” group, originally named “Let’s Move Abroad”, those expressing interest in moving out have been branded “country haters” by the government and its supporters, with their motives being questioned.

 

Democrat Party Spokesperson Ramet Rattanachaweng said today (Wednesday) that the trend is an attempt to discredit the government, which is doing its best to solve the country’s problems. “I believe all Thais think the same, which is being proud of being Thai. I don’t like to see this becoming a trend, as it will damage the country.”

The only Thais I can think of any great significance were either born, educated or went abroad at some point.

as admins of this group are living in thailand and under their real names, this group would shortly be closed down by police pressure. 

They would throw sedition and computer crime paragraphs, and lese majeste for a good measure, take passwords and turn this group into prayuth lovers moderated group.

then hundreds copycats will spring up, several for each country in the world. 

They can't win online.

 

sadly, immigration from thailand to anywhere is heavily limited now, due to pandemic and lack of vax in thailand - they just can't travel that easily, as earlier. 

If trend persist thai internal ministry will withdraw passports and stop issuing new ones

The people that want to leave are the people who want Thailand to be a better nation. The criminals, corruption lovers, nepotism lovers, cronyism lovers, fascists, royalists, and military thugs want to stay and keep the nation under their control at the expense of the masses. If these people wanting to leave were actually to leave, once they get abroad, they need to hunt down and kick out the family members of the criminals, corruption lovers nepotism lovers, cronyism lovers, fascists, royalists, and military thugs. Why would they want to live abroad knowing the same scumbags are there because of their family crimes in Thailand. Too many family members of the corrupt and oppressive regimes get access to the rest of the world. They are already there doing nothing for freedom and human rights in Thailand while enjoying the freedoms of those other places in the world. They need to go.

It's generally very difficult for a Thai citizen to get more than a couple of months in any country that would be worth getting on a plane for. Residence? No chance - developed countries have Thailand down as one of the nationalities they don't want.

(Different argument, but it's a lot more difficult than it is for westerners to stay in places like Thailand.)

Time was that Thais travelling or studying abroad would usually prefer to come back 'home' after their stay. Nowadays it's a different picture: Thais here all know what is happening outside, via internet (they are very VPN-savvy), and can see how bad things are here. But they can also see that visas are harder and harder to come by - at least to any of the few places still worth going to.

Actually I think that's Alpine Bavaria, where we know Thais are quite reasonably not welcome - some of them at least.

That's not true at all, most of the west want young people to migrate there, it's just the uneducated or criminals they don't want which isn't specific to nationality.

Many, perhaps most of those cogitating moving abroad are doing so, not because they are not proud of being Thai, but because they despair of the self serving venal clique of xenophobes and frankly fascist dinosaurs who have seized power and are open about never relinquishing it. They are also well enough informed to know that, at present, it is little more than a dream.

 

Take your reasons for and dreams of wanting to live abroad, and use them to build the society which you want to live in here. There are enough of you, they can't stop you!

if all these people would join the university students in their protest, and even more come on the streets and demand the government to leave despite the RTP with their teargas .. Than everybody could be proud on their country.. But now a bunch of old incompetent men are holding the people almost like in prison with lies, pocket money , no solutions for the Covid vaccines, and selfenrichment.. It is a shame ..

As explained to me by my Thai neighbour yesterday.

And she said it's the first time she ever said anything against Thailand or it government, and she's not alone in her thoughts.

Many of her friends are now criticising the government.

The people in power were young "players" then. 

 

The people in power gave the orders which resulted in the 2010 Wat Pathum Wanaram shootings.

 

Everyone knows what these people are capable of, what they would do if in the end they thought that they were losing power.

 

I think it will come eventually.

Obviously you have not tried getting Thais a Schengen visa, or Australian or NZvisa for more than a brief holiday. I have.

Thailand is on the list 'flagged' as likely to overstay and cause problems for those and many other places. Hence virtually impossible to get long-stay visas except for university, which is prohibitively expensive for many Thai kids and even then they have to return on completion.
