CCSA spokesman Dr Thavee Visanuyothin revealed that 15,378 people have sneaked across the border into Thailand since the start of the year.

And they continue to come.

These people posed a serious threat for the spread of Covid-19, he said, asking that Thais inform on illegal immigrants.

Of the total 6,072 are from Myanmar, 5,114 Cambodia and 882 crossed from Laos.

Despite PM Prayuth Chan-ocha's policy to shore up the borders they continue to cross over natural land areas with the latest daily figures for those caught being 15 from Myanmar, four each from Laos and Cambodia and one on the southern border with Malaysia.

Thaveesin was giving the latest updates on the world Covid situation and the numbers in Thailand on Sunday as reported by Daily News

Worldwide the figure stood at 158 million infections and 3.2 million deaths, he said.

The latest daily figures among Asian neighbors were 6,000+ in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines and about 4,500 in Malaysia.

In Thailand there were 2,101 new cases and 17 more deaths.

Those recovered and sent home were more than new cases at 2,186.

Some 29,371 people were still being treated in hospitals in the kingdom and of these 1,142 were in a serious condition with 394 on incubators.

Infections in places like entertainment, from parties, concerts and restaurants in Bangkok were down but spread of the virus was being increasingly seen in markets, communities and at bus stations.

Of the latest number 1,457 cases were in Bangkok and surrounding areas and 629 in 71 other provinces.

Why report this now as more and more vaccines become available, is it to make sure those who are having doubts to think again, just asking.

That's only the ones they know about though.

Yes, the ones they have put the grab on and thrust into captivity somewhere.  You can probably double that number or even triple it for those that have escaped the long-arm of the law, and melted away into society.

Seriously confusing, how can they say how many crossed the borders if as they claim the people sneaked in?😕

I guess the feet on the ground have to be meticulous in their record keeping so everyone knows how much has to be bumped up to whoever............5555

The OP is spot on.

There's been inadequate control of illegal entrants.

I also suspect some approved entrants are also to blame: e.g. big-wigs on casino breaks, day traders and cargo lorry drivers.

This COVID business will not go away as long as unchecked foreigners and others crosses uncontrolled and unguarded borders between Thailand and other neighboring countries and until they will find a solutions how to either minimize or stop it all together, this COVID will be alive and well and killing Thai people and the Thai economy...

Well they have an entire army Just practicing . Why not get them to protect the unmanned border areas rather than  staying in barracks.??

The Gov need to come down hard on any firms taking on illegal workers. By losing their license to operate if caught.

....or paying even more to the governor?

No surprises as people are fleeing repressive governments while also looking for work.

Does that include all the Thais that have been caught re-entering Illegally back in Thailand

Every country has ingress from foreigners to some extant - this is unavoidable. The problem is a governments ability to monitor and continue. Unfortunately the Thai authorities apart from draconian lockdowns have very little else in their arsenal. They have a healthcare service that could not contain a big outbreak, very poor statistical gathering and collation and a vaccine program best with changed and delays.

Thailand basically locked its doors to 40 million people and that means the amount coming through is statistically negligible, what is of concern is the authorities to act rather than apportion blame.

What is the positivity rate in Myanmar? 5%?

OK, to be fair, the really sick will of course not travel.

Covid is easily transmitted by symptomless carriers.

15,378 illegal immigrants? You know the number and can easily identify them by country or where they crossed from? Amazing. All that and you blame them?🙈👍🤣

They probably posted it on Facebook that they'd just sneaked in.

That's how the police know, and why the police are always checking FB on their phones. Seems obvious to me.

But it needs to be mentioned, the police checking FB in their sa-mart BMWs makes all the difference. 😂
