webfact
Picture: Naew Na An Immigration Bureau spokesman said at the weekend that IB chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang and senior officials have no plans to open Thailand's land borders. Pol Maj-Gen Achayon Kraithong told Naew Na that strict measures were in place to stop people sneaking across the border. The comments came as the CCSA spokesman admitted that more than 15,000 had sneaked in from Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia this year alone posing a severe threat of the spread of Covid-19. Achayon reminded people that strict penalties are in place for those who break the law or aid and abet such as 2 year jail terms and fines of 40,000 baht. He urged the public to call 1178 to report illegal immigrants. -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2021-05-10 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

Yet your own Thai Citizens keep sneaking in because they do not like your quarantine and other measures Sir. How many of those from India will eventually filter through and bring that variant in with them. You should be more worried about getting vaccinations moving. 9 minutes ago, webfact said: He urged the public to call 1178 to report illegal immigrants. I was going to make a similar comment, comparing two different news headlines on the subject today: This one: Illegal immigration: 15,000+ have sneaked into Thailand posing Covid risk since start of year vs this one: No plans to open Thai borders - strict measures still in place I'm glad they're "strict." Hate to see what might be happening if they were NOT strict. 2

Cake Monster
The terminology " Sneaked " has probably just been placed onto those Illegals that have hired a Thai guide to see them over. The " Sneaked " part is because these guides are not paying any Dash to the Officials

internationalism
each day there are around 120 illegal immigrants stopped at the borders. So the of those, who successfully entered is probably 10x bigger. There are long established human trafficking routes
Sydebolle
I am utterly surprised, that a middle level officer of this distinguished government, Mr. Sompong Chingduang, in his capacity as Immigration Bureau Top Banana and senior officials have the authority to open or close Thailand's land borders. In any other country he would be executing, what the legislative would instruct - interesting constellation again. Living in Nong Khai I can assure you, that this little city is inching along without all the traffic from and to Laos; the going fee for crossing the Mekong river is apparently Baht 4'000 and being paid by people who seem to have to cross. I do not know how this works and if it is true but Thailand has always been good for unorthodox surprises. For the time being the big supermarkets like Big C, Lotus Asawann and Makro usually feature more staff than shoppers - question is only, how long that can go on. Meanwhile they keep on removing one product after the other from the shelves which reduces the number of customers further as the latter resort to online shopping. "Lord, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing" - is one of the sayings in the Christian literature of the Men of the Cloth!

I understand Myanmanr is not the place to be at the moment, but they won't come here if they can't get work! It's a two-way street.

Since 99,995 of us are totally fine even if we get the virus, they should worry more about speeding and drunk driving - that actually kills people. thailand49
Doesn't really matter if they are closed? As the article also noted they are sneaking in 15,000 this year alone and from what I heard it doesn't take much to get in and have the guard look the other way while they get in vehicle and bus load waiting to take them away!???? This article gives a good indication as to why it has spread so fast the last few months.
internationalism
this over 15k is how many were stopped at the border. does mean, than some 10x more are already inside the country. And those are responsibility of immigration. At the end of february there was blank amnesty for all illegal in thailand, on condition they find a legal employer who would register them. as to spread of covid. The 3rd wave was caused by hiso and mafia going to poipet casino without being stamped by thai immigration (probably at night). Straight from weekend casino tours they were coming to clubs for some more entertainment. Exactly same group of people. Impossible to stop all people getting in, but making it as difficult as possible will be a deterrent and will keep a lot out. I see the usual complainers are predictably complaining. As they would have if the police had decided to lift the restrictions.
Stargeezr
My Thai relatives are headed back to Bangkok on May 19th and they have to stay in quarantine for 2 weeks at an approved quarantine Thai hotel. They are okay with that and are just happy to be going back to Thailand to see family again. I am happy that Thailand is still keeping the borders closed except for business.
