US man with Covid flees hospital because doctors wouldn't let him sleep with his Thai wife

Sanook reported that a 51 year old American man suffering from Covid-19 fled Chanuman Hospital in Amnat Charoen on Sunday and walked home. 

 

He was spotted on the Chanuman to Ban Nikhom Plaeng 4 Road before officials found him at home and persuaded him to return to hospital. 

 

He was pictured making some two finger and thumb gesture as officials in hazmat suits escorted him.

 

Sanook said that he had requested to be moved to a bed in his Thai wife's room. She also has Covid. 

 

But doctors turned down his request so he went home in a huff.

 

This caused local residents such fear that the Chanuman district chief was obliged to beef up security at the hospital, reported the media.

He has been ordered into a hospital, (in accordance with the law) but his wife, who also has Covid has not. Why not?

There could be countless reasons for this. Should a hospital just cater tgo any whim of a patient. Who knows the situation its the hospitals call. I can just imagine the chaos (on top of the stress there already is) when they have to cater to the wishes of people.

 

Could be that the wife needed extra care. The room could be to small. Regulations are there for a reason. 

 

Its a hospital not a hotel and patients should listen not make it even harder for healthcare.

I'm sure there are lots of Thais who have done something similar or not telling where they have been when health people want to track potential covid infections yadda yadda yadda. However the media is not going to mention much about that. Any Falangs that screw up will get front page coverage. Sanook lives for this. 

This is how its has been for two decades. It's just gets more in your face the longer the wuhan pandemic runs. Good reminder, you better have options.

Normal Thai hospital policy is to insist a relative shares your room.

As I read it his wife, also with Covid, was in the same hospital but in a different room. How you consider the decision not to allow them to be together is up to you. Personally, I can't see any valid medical reason to deny that request, but I'm not a doctor. Certainly, his decision to go home in a huff was a bit of an overreaction; maybe if they'd explained to him exactly why it wasn't a good idea all this could've been avoided.  I do know that Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, requires you to have a Thai person stay with you if you want a private room. If I was a cynical person I might suspect that getting the Farang to pay for two rooms, rather than one, might be a motive, but I'm sure that wasn't the case here; no doubt, there are good medical reasons to keep covid patients separated.

She is most likely awaiting transfer to a hospital.

 

His wife is probably a lot younger than him so she is probably asymptomatic and will be transferred to a field hospital instead.
