Thailand reports 4,887 COVID-19 cases, 32 new deaths

Strange how Thailand could have such a major prison-based COVID outbreak now considering what happened back in early April in Narathiwat, and what the Corrections Department said they were doing at the time:

April 4, 2021:

Thailand’s prisons on COVID-19 red alert'

The Corrections Department has suspended visits to prisoners and detainees in all prisons, from Monday until May 5th, after over 100 prisoners and prison officials in Narathiwat and Surat Thani provinces were found to be infected with COVID-19.

The department has also imposed other measures to prevent the spread of the virus. No prisoners will be allowed to work outside their prisons, there will be no transfers between prisons, no outsiders are allowed entry to prisons and new prisoners will be isolated in separate cells for 14-21 days and be screened at least twice before they are to be moved out of isolation.

Regarding prisoners or detainees who must appear in court, alternative measures are being worked out by the Corrections Department.

So if all that was actually enforced, how did we end up with 2,835 COVID cases in the prisons today?

Private hospitals target July date for first Moderna jabs

Private hospitals in Thailand are targeting July as the earliest date in which the Moderna vaccines might be made available in Thailand, sources told Thai Enquirer on Thursday.

Moderna is the first vaccine that private hospitals will be allowed to bring in as an ‘alternative vaccine’ to the government’s vaccination plans.

The government has orders to import Pfizer, Sputnik, and Sinovacs vaccines to complement the locally produced AstraZeneca jabs.

Will embarrassment over the shocking levels of Covid infection prompt some overdue official action to reduce chronic overcrowding in Thailand’s jails?

Thailand: Covid-19 Outbreaks in Prisons

(New York) – People held in Thailand’s overcrowded prisons and detention facilities are at grave risk from Covid-19 outbreaks, Human Rights Watch said today. The Thai authorities should immediately act to ensure that prisoners and detainees have access to adequate protective measures and health care. The authorities should swiftly reduce overcrowding by releasing people who do not pose a serious and concrete risk to others.

On May 12, 2021, Thailand’s Corrections Department announced that 1,795 inmates in Bangkok Remand Prison and 1,040 in Central Women’s Correctional Institution had tested positive for the virus that causes Covid-19. In addition, hundreds of people detained in provincial prisons such as in Chiang Mai and Narathiwat have reportedly tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

“The Thai government is obligated under international law to ensure that prisoners and detainees have adequate health protections and care, particularly during escalating Covid-19 outbreaks,” said Brad Adams, Asia director. “Besides providing health care and virus testing, the authorities should reduce the detainee population through supervised release of those held on politically motivated charges or for minor offenses, or who face greater risk from underlying health conditions.”

Today I think real figures, and they were happy that there was announced that there were 2835 from jail. So they could use that to explain the high numbers. But as I read yesterday these 2835 were not cases from 1 day but already over a longer time. So probably tomorrow business as usual with  around 2000 cases

It is hard to imagine covid hasn't ripped through all the jails and the people left are now immune.

The wave from Songkran continues, and without folks understanding that without mass testing everywhere it keeps slithering along.

We went for Songkran.....I had to no choice, but I isolated when we got there........all the Bangkok relatives arrived.....no masks.....sharing water.....communal eating.....upwards of twenty each night......if the virus doesn't spread it will be a miracle.

If it is in the prisons, then everyone in there is likely to get it. Even the Khlong Toey slums don't have the overcrowding the prisons have.

And the government has been releasing prisoners because of overcrowding and no place to put the new ones.

Does anybody believe in their vaccine?

Check out the article noted below that refers to situation in the Seychelles indicating that the Chinese vaccine Sinopharm does not stop the spread of Covid very well.
Although there seems to be a reduction in severity.

Yes, it is a shame folks don't seem to listen and take the proper precautions.

Nice, but Sinopharm is not used here in Thailand. It is Sinovac, two different vaccines. However, I get your point that your making.  It could be the same here, we may not know for quite awhile however.

Girlfriends sister came back from "Jermany", where she lives. She did her 14 days quarantine in BKK;

She went back to see family in northeast Isaan and had to lock herself up in a room to do another 14days quarantine.

They keep a close eye on her. Before yesterday, she went quickly out to by some food from the motorbike seller but neighbours were quick to run away and to inform the "head sheriff"

In the evening, when he does his announcements, everyone knew already about.

Ridiculous

Imagine you are a white farang in a village. You stick out like....

Like a big white beacon with a red face...yep ????????

NONE of the vaccines stop the spread of Covid.

They reduce it a little bit.

This is why Vaccine Passports are total nonsense and any country saying vaccinated people do not need to quarantine are IDIOTS of the highest order.

Complete stupidity.......its just those who got the vaccine now trying to say they are special and should get the red carpet......when scientific evidence says they can get and spread the virus.

So vaccine passports are a complete and utter waste of time..................nonsense of the highest order.
