Australia didn't have a grim covid situation precisely because of the draconian measures.

It's exactly what the Hong Kong medical expert who was in charge of their Sars recovery said at the beginning of covid; only by implementing draconian measures would you be able to flatten the curve and recover. And it's exactly why the whole world is still not getting better a year and half onwards because there's always individuals who think they should be free to do whatever they see fit whatever the consequences to those around them.

The Zero Covid strategy can work only for an island...

For a country like Thailand it didn't and it won't.

Furthermore the country can't afford it (that's another issue).

For instance New-Zeland can afford it (rich, isolated country)... But what about Maldives ? Population 500 000... and there is only tourism there. Nothing else !

So go to explain to 100 % of the population that they must seal off their island... Forever... Because even with full vaccination... Covid cases are still increasing in Maldives... ????

Last but not least, after 15 months of data... is it still possible to justify the Zero Covid strategy ?

The way you're using the word "consequences" highlighst the core issue : we over state the reality of the menace.

For Thailand and its 70 millions... a few hundred deads in 1 year... and so many people are loosing their cognitive abilities, are unable to put the menace into perspective... that's the real issue there.

So to summarize... Zero Covid strategy is :

-technically impossible to implement for many countries

-financially impossible to sustain for many countries

-not justified from a public health point of view

Like I said many times before, tell me again how you feel when you become part of the minority who died of covid. Because those numbers won't matter to you until you become part of them.

Perhaps you can enlighten us all as you seem to know better...

What are these jokers smoking? 3.5 million tourists, from where? Australia's borders are likely to remain closed until mid-2022 aside from travel to New Zealand (which opened last month) and a few other "low risk" countries. These could include Singapore, Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and possibly Taiwan and later, Vietnam. Thailand has not been mentioned in the first phase and thus we can probably assume it won't be part of any Australian travel bubble this year.

Secondly, in a country that is proving itself to be one of the most totalitarian in the world, what with Buri Ram forcing vaccines on it's residents, Phuket fining and threatening foreigners with deportation for hosting a friend over for a beer in their OWN homes, Surat Thani fining anyone who drinks alcohol at home, and every province issuing fines of 1000-20000 Baht for not wearing a face muzzle, what makes them think tourists will put up with this nonsense?

Even those willing to be vaccinated, are not going to put up with this. Isn't the vaccine supposed to allow all our freedoms to return? If tourists are still going to be required to be muzzled in public, including on a Phuket beach, despite being vaccinated, then Thailand can hammer the final nail in the tourism coffin.

At this point in time, there is more liberty in China than in Thailand. I can't imagine the Chinese would be interested in coming to a country where there are no casinos, where the fun police nitpick every thing you do and can potentially deport you for not wearing a face mask. It's happening in Cambodia (Chinese nationals have been deported for not wearing masks or breaking lockdown orders), Bali is doing it and Thailand isn't far behind.

China has tropical beaches too (in Hainan). Aside from Phuket being warm all year-round (whereas Sanya is a little cool between December and February), there is no reason for Chinese to want to come to Thailand.

Fiji not 'low risk' unfortunately..they have a quite substantial outbreak there with lockdown in place and Singapore has another cluster..this isn't going away anytime soon .UK and North America are gearing up to get their economies and population up and running by vaccinating themselves out of this and Brits heading to Portugal by the thousands when Boris gives the thumbs up..The Portugese won't know what's hit them when that happens!

And again I'm telling you that this kind of argument is pointless.

We're trying to figure out the big picture... Individual cases are irrelevant.

Yes if a car driver kills my child... I probably will be... upset...

Therefore, should we ban... cars ?

Yes if one day i developp a cancer, i will be upset and "against" cancer....

I mean... this kind of thinking is like breaking open doors.

It's void.

Individual cares are hardly irrelevant.  Put together, they make up the big picture.  And of course, if it's you, a relative or close friend, it really hits home.

That argument is far from pointless.

Let me tell you what's breaking. The new variants of the virus are breaking through the borders, infecting inoculated personnel and into the community. We are not even close to understanding the virus enough to be able to see three months down the road, let alone the "big picture". When things goes further south, you will be irrelevant.

I took it to mean ALL international flights, not just Thai Aiways.

Bold of you to assume any form of solid meaning. Next week they'll probably say they were talking about migratory birds as a pilot testing program for airspace control, and declare it a success.

There is no "Zero COVID Strategy" in Thailand. Just a policy of containment to prevent the sort of scenario now unfolding in India and Brazil and previously seen in Europe and US.

You are not stuck in the UK Richard. You just choose not too, or are unable to get time off work or you cant afford it. Flights arrive daily, do your quarantine and then see your family, simple.

No it's NOT simple. I have to return to the UK every 9 months for personal reasons and quarantining both here in the UK and then Thailand for a month is mad. I also get some medication from UK that I cannot get in Thailand easily - getting stuck in Thailand could potentially kill me. So, not as simple as you make it out

When car crashes or cancer become highly contagious, you should definitely start to worry.

I am confused by this announcement. Are they talking about a full schedule? As you can see from the link above, plenty of International flights arrive and depart daily.

My guess is that they are arriving and leaving way below capacity and to keep the slots. Mrs Chelseafan flew back on Qatar last week and she was one of 30 or so people on board. I suspect they also keep the planes running to support cargo operations. If you count the flights between 6am and 3.40pm , there are only 25 flights, way way below the airports normal operating schedule.

Oh great - Moderna is being delivered around October which seems to be the only vaccine available to foreigners.  So we have about 30 days to get completely vaccinated before all sorts of variants of Covid enter the country.  Lovely

Many expats are getting their AZ jabs starting the beginning of June.  No need to wait until October unless you specifically want Moderna.  Which I do!! LOL

I think it will be easier starting in June.  Who knows, but that's what's being said.  Be patient for a few more weeks.

I have heard of a few who were able to register via the app, many who weren't, and some who registered via their hospital or doctor.  Crazy times....

Yes sadly I know already of many people who have had covid with the latest outbreak.  We had it 12 months ago and are certainly keen to avoid getting it twice.  Lots of mixed messages coming from the govt as they scramble to play catch up on the vaccines with the gradual realization that the new variants arnt as easy to control.  Best of luck to you also.
