What happens when these two upstanding organizations start to step on each others toes with no mediating force to calm them down? Chonsawas Asavahame and Yosawadee Chonsawas may be called on to declare assets Reports have stated that former Mayor of Samut Prakan Chonsawas Asavahame who recently turned down a position within the Ministry of Interior for fears ongoing cases against him would tarnish the government’s image, may have to declare his assets to the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC). The NCCC has stated that even though Chonsawas revoked his position within the ministry, his name has passed through the approval of the Cabinet and thus it is considered he is politically active. The NCCC reasons that his politically activity obligates him to declare his assets to the commission under the rule of the constitution. The constitution states that politicians must declare their assets within 30 days of taking on their position, after they relinquish their post and one year after that. - ThaiNews ============================================================================= As his reasoning for turning down the position seem a little... uhmmm...shall we say, imaginative, one wonders if an attempt to avoid this asset declaration requirement might have played a role. The news might not have been an issue had the person appointed not been Chonsawat Asavahame. Chonsawat's father is Puea Pandin Party Chairman Vatana Asavahame, who has fled to Cambodia following a verdict against him in a corruption case. He reportedly stays in a casino hotel in Poi Pet. The Supreme Court's Criminal Tribunal for Political Office Holders sentenced Vatana to 10 years in jail on Monday for corruption related to the Klong Dan wastewater treatment plant. Chonsawat, 39, is currently facing trial on charges of assaulting a policeman. He was charged after allegedly refusing to stop for an alcohol test and assaulting the officer who tried to get him to stop earlier this year. The court has scheduled the first hearing in the case for September 17. Earlier, in September 2006, the Samut Prakan Provincial Court sentenced Chonsawat to four years in jail for electoral fraud during Samut Prakan's mayoral election, with his voting rights revoked for 10 years. Up to 1,000 false ballot cards were found in the 1999 election. The case is now with the Appeals Court. Regarding a personal matter, Chonsawat has appeared in news items speculating about his relationship with model Yossawadee Hassadeevichit. In fact, this is the second time that Chonsawat has been offered such a position in Samak Sundaravej's Cabinet. In February, the Cabinet approved his appointment as a Deputy Secretary to Deputy Interior Minister Sithichai Kowsurat. Many ministers vouched for his qualifications and said he deserved a chance. Today, the Criminal Court has ruled out the verdict and sentenced Chonsawat Assawahem to a 1-year incarceration for obstructing police officers who requested him to take the breathalyzer examination at the police checkpoint in the capital on May 20, 2007. Chonsawat was driving two famous Thai models, Aunchalee and Yossawadee Hussadeewijit back to their residence on Petchaburi road, but was later stopped by the Makkasan station’s police officers. The driver and both passengers had refused to follow polices’ instructions, which led them to physically assault Sergeant Prarop Saengnil, the Makkasan Traffic police commander. After examining all the evidences and witnesses, all three defendants were found guilty. However, since the three defendants had admitted their wrongdoings in front of the judges, the Court then decided to deduct the punishment of Chonsawat and Miss Yossawadee to 1-year imprisonment with 9,000 Baht fine, while Miss Aunchalee would receive 10-month imprisonment and 8,000 Baht fine. Due to the three defendants’ lack of prior criminal records, they would receive probation for 3 years. *See? And you probably thought I was just being sarcastic when I typed earlier that he had a good and clean past record....well except for a few felonies and miscellaneous misdemeanors posted about...* Nonetheless, the three defendants have to serve 24 hours of community service and check up with their probation officers once for every 4 month. Today, the Criminal Court has ruled out the verdict and sentenced Chonsawat Assawahem to a 1-year incarceration for obstructing police officers who requested him to take the breathalyzer examination at the police checkpoint in the capital on May 20, 2007. Chonsawat was driving two famous Thai models, Aunchalee and Yossawadee Hussadeewijit back to their residence on Petchaburi road, but was later stopped by the Makkasan station’s police officers. The driver and both passengers had refused to follow polices’ instructions, which led them to physically assault Sergeant Prarop Saengnil, the Makkasan Traffic police commander. After examining all the evidences and witnesses, all three defendants were found guilty. However, since the three defendants had admitted their wrongdoings in front of the judges, the Court then decided to deduct the punishment of Chonsawat and Miss Yossawadee to 1-year imprisonment with 9,000 Baht fine, while Miss Aunchalee would receive 10-month imprisonment and 8,000 Baht fine. Due to the three defendants’ lack of prior criminal records, they would receive probation for 3 years. *See? And you probably thought I was just being sarcastic when I typed earlier that he had a good and clean past record....well except for a few felonies and miscellaneous misdemeanors posted about...* Nonetheless, the three defendants have to serve 24 hours of community service and check up with their probation officers once for every 4 month. Chonsawat, the youngest son of fugitive politician Vatana Asavahame, and two aides Sakul Pramulchai and Pratchaya Chaiyakul, were named as the defendants in the case. They were charged with assaulting Police Sargent Prarop Saengnin, a traffic police officer after he refused to let Chonsawat leave a checkpoint without taking a breathalyzer test on May 20 last year. Chonsawat was stopped by police on suspicion he might have been drunk. Chonsawat refused to take a breathalyzer test. He called his aides who assaulted the police sergeant. The court found the three guilty of assaulting, obstructing and insulting an officer on duty. The court initially sentenced Chonsawat and Sakul to two years in jail and a fine of 18,000 baht each. Pratchaya was jailed for 20 months and fined 16,000 baht. As the three defendants had confessed, the court commuted the sentences given to Chonsawat and Sakul to a year in jail and a 9,000 baht fine. Pratchaya's sentence was commuted to 10 months' jail and an 8,000 baht fine. As they had no prior criminal records and had apologised to the officer, the court commuted their jail terms to three years suspended. They were also ordered to do 24 hours of community service each. TIT Seems the end result is nearly as you predicted 16 months ago. But I just hope those two ruffian sisters have learned a lesson! Other witnesses run off to the rice fields and, if they're brought in later to testify, they too didn't see anything. >>> Prime suspect won't show up for hearing. >>> cop who lost face will get pay off by VIP father. >>> defendant will get 'slap on wrist' reprimand. >>> nothing will change, and VIP politicians' sons precedence over cops is asserted yet again.
