webfact
Picture: Daily News Defence ministry spokesman Lt-Gen Khoncheep Tantrawanich revealed yesterday that 32,423 people had been arrested in connection with illegal immigration in the period from July 1st 2020 to May 30th this year. This comprised 15,393 people from Myanmar, 11,011 Cambodians,, 2,661 Laotians and 92 people from Malaysia. In addition 1,945 Thais were arrested after being part of the illegal business. They were among 282 agents busted. Since the start of the year there have been 18,649 people stopped. Khoncheep noted that cheap labor was required by Thai businesses and there was a ready supply of people prepared to risk crossing into Thailand. Illegal immigrants invariably use agents to guide them across natural borders then transport them to places of work inside Thailand for a fee. Thailand's borders are notoriously porous, notes Thaivisa. The arrests mentioned yesterday are both at border areas and internally. A total of 1,686 military and police checkpoints have been used and there are 1,815 mobile units working on the issue, reported Daily News. The media reported that illegal migrants represented an acute risk of the spread of Covid-19. -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2021-06-01 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

Yes, wonder if they were charged over 60,000 baht for quarantine ? It's what I've been saying all along. What is the frickin point of Quarantining tourists (other than to prop up the hotel industry) when there are illegals from Myanmar and Combodia bringing the damned virus into the country. The whole thing is a farce....as usual. Edited June 1, 2021 by Chelseafan

Caldera
What's very obvious (but not as readily admitted) is that these borders aren't merely porous, as is so often claimed. That would mean that it's just difficult to police them, and that some migrants slip through despite the best efforts. That's clearly not the case; traffickers need to rely on complicit officials to keep up this amount of traffic.
chalawaan
The ones they caught mind.... Not to mention their own dodgy division HQs working to facilitate the cross-boder chicanery. Haven't a few more LEO's just been nicked in the 'Daylight Taiwanese Abduction' case? Bless 'em all, bless em all, the wrong and the rorts and the gall.... brucegoniners
And this is why we have a third wave. The army has done a horrible job of sealing the border. If they had we'd be back to normal now.

AnnieSeek
Myanmar also has a problem with it's open border areas to parts of India. As soon as Mayanmar became unstable, Thailand was going to get what was happening in India. No coincidence that things started to go wrong as soon as Mynanmar became destabalised and India went crazy with it's numbers.
