AIS International for SMS Only

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a prepaid AIS SIM that costs bt150 per month for unlimited internet.  Not exactly sure how calls work as I rarely use my smartphone as a phone but they seem to be free.  Sending SMS's seem to cost somewhere between bt2-3.

Anyway, I'm going home for several months and would like to keep my AIS SIM functioning for ONLY receiving SMS's .... won't need internet and won't be using it for calls.  Basically to keep using that phone number as SMS contact for online banking, apps, email etc.

What's the easiest way to go about this?  Around how much would it cost?  How would it work?

Many thanks

Phone AIS and get them to ensure it's switched on for roaming, ask how much receiving an sms will cost

Yes.

Or just subscribe *125# SEND

See page 9  https://www.ais.th/aisroaming/en/Interroaming_manual-en.pdf

Consider disabling mobile date, withing the phone (Settings) and in the network.

Just press *129*1# and call to disable. internet work
Choose to enable internet, press *129*2# and call.

Also consider registering for WiFi Calling, which will give in-country rates while anywhere in the world with WiFi.  https://www.ais.th/4g/vowifi/en/

Add value before departing, possibly in 10 baht/30 day expiry increments so as to extend validity to 365 days.

On page 9 as referenced

*125# SEND or *125*1# SEND

The latter should work for you, it does for me. Apologies for not being more thorough.

*125*2# SEND    Will cancel or turn off Internaitonal Roaming

Receiving SMS should be free, because you can't control it. Somebody could just send you 1000 SMS, and if they would charge you for every SMS...

At least it's free with my German sim card here in Thailand, and I would expect that with a Thai sim card in another country it's the same.

Yes, provided: (AIS does not charge for receiving SMSes, even when roaming outside of Thailand)

you have international roaming enabled

your service has not expired

there is a roaming partner available in your destination

your handset works with local frequencies

If you want to send an SMS, it would be ~ 9 baht per plus VAT.

Thank you to all above for responses.

One more quick question....

When you're on international roaming, approximately how much does it cost per minute to receive a telephone call?

Expensive, most people don't use it, just for texts
