Italy beat Turkey 3-0 in a match that was shown live on NBT2HD after a tycoon stepped in with 300 million baht to allow the Thai state broadcaster to air all the matches at the tournament held across Europe. But as the tournament prepared to start Pol Maj-Gen Yingyot Thepjamnong warned the Thai public and parents about the perils of having a flutter. It's illegal and the police will act to stop it, he warned in comments reported by Daily News yesterday. Prosecutions for individual bettors and companies offering bets would be made. He called betting money and time wasting that could lead to fines and jail. He urged the pulic to call 191 or 1599 to stamp it out. Thaivisa notes there is one thing you can bet on (ok, that's just an expression!) - there will be cases of people caught for gambling on the tournament over the next month in betting crazy Thailand. The final is at London's Wembley Stadium on July 11th. Today's games feature Wales vs Switzerland at 8pm Thai time, Denmark vs Finland at 11 pm and Belgium vs Russia at 2 am (Sunday morning). A private indivudual ponies up 300 MM baht for the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand, which is the broadcasting arm of the Government Public Relations Department, a division of the Thai Government. I’ve known these guys since my early 20’s - a lot of whisky has been drunk and a lot of football played between us over the years. At the party they’d set up a casino, tables, croupiers - very well organised... Cards on about 8 separate tables (in a suite in a hotel room). My mate was holding his girlfriends handbag... I saw that as a photo Op so I could stitch him up later. I took the photo... Wow, the room stopped !!! - I’d just taken a photo of a group of Policemen gambling !!! My mate laughed and they all carried on !!.... I’ve been to a lot of parties, gatherings and reunions since. The common theme booze and gambling, each and every time and they all have a great time. But I’ve never seen a group of people in Thailand gamble more than the police do ! I don’t know why gambling is illegal - the illicit nature makes it more attractive. Just legalise it and educate people of the risks. Offer counselling for those who need it.
