Thai Interior Ministry U-turns on special vaccine quota for ThaiBev’s employees

Thailand’s Ministry of Interior has made an abrupt U-turn overits decision to grant privileged COVID-19 vaccination access to employees of Thai Beverage Public Company Limited, or ThaiBev, and their families, after the move came under widespread criticism on social media.

 

ThaiBev, Thailand’s largest and one of Southeast Asia’s largest beverage companies, with offices in six countries, asked the Interior Ministry for an allocation of vaccines to inoculate its 43,201 employees and 28,244 family members in all provinces of Thailand including Bangkok.

 

On June 17th, Interior Permanent Secretary Chatchai Promlert sent an urgent tele-message to all provincial governors instructing them to spare vaccines to inoculate ThaiBev’s employees and families.

Looks like Thai Bev will have to do what many Hi-So's have done, fly the families out to the US for the free vaccines offered, let them shop and bring back gifts for the bosses and then done and dusted.

I dont think they will bring back much duty free booze.

Shameless, huh? No attempt to sugarcoat this with some practicality. Inoculate the delivery drivers, as they have the most exposure with the public. Inoculate the factory workers, because of their close quarters. Inoculate some of the top execs, because they have to travel and meet with people. No, just inoculate the whole company, because they, or rather its hi-so owners, somehow deserve it.

Another outstanding example how big money beats morale and Covid measures.

While the country is harassed with shutdowns and uncountable rules the big construction sites are busy as usual. Workers are carted from/to their shanty towns on truck beds.

Maybe 30 people standing shoulder by shoulder.

But this will be put down to a misunderstanding. Or it was really meant to be a survey but provincial governors got confused.

This does not embarrass Thais (or any Asians, really). This is expected behavior. Thais don't genuinely believe in equality at birth. They believe the exact opposite - inequality at birth. It's fundamental to Thai culture.

I'll give it another generation and I expect that will be the same pretty much globally.  What do people really think this covid dog-and-pony show is really about?  Transferring the wealth of nations to the richest while impoverishing most of the rest of the world and controlling the commoners. ThaiBev is one of the major financial contributors for Palang Pracharat. So they asked the government for preferred treatment, as is expected. Then the story broke on "social"..., then the u-turn, also as expected.

you would need to look at yourself in the mirror and answer that question. 
 

my 13 year old daughter would, I hope, come up with the right answer as to why it is disgraceful that a well to do and connected family not only seeks special treatment for its employees, but gets it.

All disgusting corruption in favour of companies that bankrolled the government in the last elections and are preparing to do the same again.  This is just one that got caught jumping the queue to snaffle up supplies bought with taxpayers' cash so that more vulnerable people have to wait longer.  There are many others and one can be sure that Thai Bev has been assured that they will get the vaccines in a week or two once the fuss has died down.  Thai Bev is a good one to focus on because they are not producing any essential products for the nation.  I see no reason why Thai Bev employees and their families shouldn't queue up with everyone else.

If ThaiBev has influence, why are the bars closed and restaurants suffering by not being able to sell drink with meals?  Surely that's a large chunk of their business gone?

Hmmm... surely looks like these Sirivadhanabhakdis do have a lot of free time at hand to... uhm... proliferate. Even puts the Q'ing emperors and the old Ottoman sultans in their places.

Can we see the order rescinding the previous order?

 

What is a Permanent Secretary? What's his authority? Is there a Minister to whom he reports? Did the Minister, if there is one, instruct the PS to issue the orders, or did he do it on his own authority?

 

In UK, a Permanent Secretary runs a Civil Service Department that advises Ministers and administers policy made by the Government. He has no authority to step outside the bounds of such policy once made.
