The Thai parliament passed the Referendum Bill on Tuesday, in its final reading, with an overwhelming 611 to 4 votes, paving the way for future constitutional amendments.

According to the new bill, a minimum of 50,000 people can now request that the Cabinet hold a referendum, while online and distance voting, including from overseas, will be accepted.

Campaigns, ahead of any referendum, can be held freely by the people, political parties and any other groups. A referendum on constitutional amendments will have to be held within four months of approval. A ban on publishing or releasing public opinion poll results has been imposed seven days before the referendum and until the voting concludes.

“Penalties have also be laid out – with one-year imprisonment and/or 20,000 Baht fine for disrupting the work of referendum committee and staff, and 1- 10 year imprisonment and/or 20,000-200,000 Baht fine for officials that abuse their power”

Officials that abuse power will be punished, great to hear there will now be consequences for those who use their power to assume power…in other news flying unicorns delivered a mountain of fairy dust to a leprechaun at the end of the rainbow earlier today.

Summary of bill:

Our ammendments are "legal"

Your ammendments are not "legal".

The road to democracy here is two u-turns.

All roads lead to the prayut regime reigning for 20 years, with an option on "Forever".

Carry on.

OK. Just like the last constitutional referendum then?

The Political Act needs first to be rescinded as well as any relevant NCPO Order (ruled by the Charter Court as still constitutionally legal) that constrains freedom of speech and amendment of criminal defamation laws.
