With occupance rates at less than 10%, perhaps that policy should change. Durian copnvention anyone ? There's some in my fridge now...GF bought it....I have learned to like it. I freeze it and slice it like Ice Cream and eat with a bit of shaved chocolate.

A mad as a March hair Thai friend of mine used to endulge in the fruit on occasion with alcohol.........I aked him why as he had that 'look' and he replied that he liked to 'feel different'...............He is a bio chemist, say no more really.....................................apply with caution...!

"to protect the image of Thai durian"

Jesus wept.  Get a life man.

Or at least be honest and say to prevent fraud and the money-making ideas being undertaken by Thai people..

Is there really any difference between Thai and Vietnamese durian?

Presumably the price in China....

The Thai stuff has held high reputation for some years but I haven't been able to compare..... I certainly won't pay for the really top notch types, incredulous prices.

Yes. The reason I asked is because they all, Thai or Vietnamese ( the durian that is) look the same to me!

I quite like the stuff but am always put off by the price. If the Vietnamese stuff is cheaper I might try and get my paws ???? on some!

There are stark differences in varieties and also the same variety can have a different taste depending on the locale it is grown in. Malaysis is interesting as they have these large Durian stall restaurants that offer dozens of varieties...some are starkly different than others. The Mong Thong Thailand is comparable to Malaysia's Musan King...but at the same time different experience.

Durian are heavy, you'd think the transport costs from Vietnam to Thailand would erase most of the margin?

I think the price in China is roughly 2.5 times that in Thailand...so when you buy a Durian here for 600 baht...that sells for about 1500 baht in China...I guess whatever the costs are they are covered. The Musan King variety from Malaysia is actually the preferred Durian in China and it goes for almost triple what the Thai variety goes for. I know they process it and freeze it in many cases before shipping to China and there is ample profit margin.

Well, now I know why the durian has entirely disappeared off the streets.

Plenty of good, reliable grower/farms selling on-line, most on FB. Order today, delivery tomorrow. But a bit pricey.

Or send a motorbike driver to Or Tor Kor.

Street durian? retch.

Yes, there are a lot of differences between locales. For instance, I think it's true to say in Malaysia the fruit are allowed to ripen on the tree before being picked, whereas in Thailand, not sure about Vietnam or Philippines, the fruit ripens after picking. Then there are the varieties. It makes an enormous difference. Golden Delicious versus a Cox's Orange Pippin anyone?

Anyway, it's all there on Google for the interested.

Alongkorn Polabut, adviser to the agriculture minister, said Mr Chalermchai ordered the Department of Agriculture to ask the Royal Thai Police Office, authorities in Chanthaburi province and concerned organizations to take decisive legal action against anyone who imported Vietnamese durian fruits and fraudulently claimed them to be. Thai durian for further export to China.

Bit rich that considering the amount of fakery openly available in Thailand which they don't appear to be so vocal on ..

The difference is that Thailand can export whole Durian fruit to China, whilst Vietnam still can only export processed Durian, ( In Dec 2020 Vietnam applied to China for this permission). Since the pandemic, the China import market has been for smaller fruit (2-4 kg) which can be delivered easily by motorcycle.

All that's left is some third rate fruit for 160 to 200b kilo.

It's all going to China

As are the sharks fins and Thai tiger bits for old Chinese men who have never heard of Viagra.

Brings back memories of working in China. Went to go to the local supermarket, was in a basement. Got half way down the stairs and driven back by this unholy stench, yep durian Right up there with some of the worse smells of China, and there were a few contenders. I am more used to the aromas of Asia now.

Cheers

Right, thank you for that. I wonder how long it will be before some enterprising Vietnamese entrepreneur starts subsidising bigger motorcycles for Chinese delivery lads?????
