PHUKET: The occupiers of plots of state land along the Layan-Leypang beachfront together estimated to have a total value of about B10 billion have until next Monday (June 28) to remove their buildings or else face them being demolished.

MaAnn Samran, chief of the Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor), served official notices of eviction to 15 people occupying some 178 rai of land, including the well-known Tony’s Restaurant at Layan Beach, on Monday (June 21).

Joining Mr MaAnn were Pawin Kuman, Director of Phuket office of the Legal Execution Department (LED), and Thanet Nawalong, Chief Administrative officer at the Thalang District office (Palad) and other officers.

One of the reasons I think not allowing foreigners to own land is a humane thing...  Keeps foreigners from getting caught up in these land disputes.

If the locals who have lived there all their lives, read Thai, and are well hooked into the rumor mill get caught up, foreigners fresh off the boat would be such sweet targets to swindle.

Encroachment of protected lands has been going on for decades. Initially we get show and promises to stop, but then it goes back to what it is. We are still waiting for Phuket to enforce existing marine rules on jetskis and to bring in the  promised safety checks on paragliders at beach. Remember when they promised to clean up airport transportation  gangsters?

Phuket opening up on 01 July so dictator MaAnn closes down beachfront restaurants on 23 June, you couldn’t make it up. These establishments provide a service to locals and tourists and create employment.  So what if they’re there illegally, what will the vacant land be used for otherwise ?

"So what if they’re there illegally,...". I suppose that type thinking can be used to rationalise most behavior...with consequences.

I am not condoning illegality, the point I am making is that this land is not being utilised at the moment so why not use it in a way that benefits customers and employees.

Under Thai land laws the occupation on land gives significant rights after a period of time.  Guess it was getting close to that time so clear them out.

So in essence if you shat in your pants it's ok because you believe people will still sit next to you and buy your goods, but what would the dirty pants be used for otherwise?.....Even if the businesses provide for locals and others they will still provide when they move.  The land will be empty.....it is after all State land from what I see in the original land dispute and fight.  Now if the state wants to change the use designation, then maybe they would lease the land to someone to build upon and maybe thats the unseen elephant in the room.

Someone must have been paid a lot to let those people build in the first place.

Who gave the people the ok and okayed the plans and permits?

Many people must get lined up to go to jail for this.

No, it's all about not selling any of the sacred land of Thailand to foreigners. Thailand for the Thais. Have you not heard that before?

Nah, mate. The reason foreigners aren't allowed to buy land is because otherwise the entire shoreline would've been bought up by now.

Protecting foreigners from land swindles like this isn't the objective.  Just a humane unintended consequence.

If they did allow foreigners to own land, their neighbors from the north would drive the prices up to where the average retiree couldn't afford it anyway.  A case of "be careful what you wish for".

I’d settle for decent roads and the ability to drive down them without being able to count the number of badly set manhole/drain covers

All over Phuket the roads have been improved/resurfaced  recently, particularly Kamala, Cherntalay, Bangtao So you either haven't been out and about or probably not in Phuket right now?

Trust me, if Thailand had allowed foreigners to buy land the entire shoreline would’ve been bought up already by now. Look at Cambodia, all the nice places by the sea have been bought by the Chinese driving the prices for rent and land up! Same thing would’ve happened in Thailand.

And who would have profited from that?

And who would profit from the other land in the same region also increasing in price?

And who would profit from all the buildings constructed on that purchased land?

And who would profit from all the businesses popping up in the area to accommodate to the growing population?

And who would profit from ......................

Private individuals, that’s who, but that’s beside the point! The point is to make sure that Thai soil stays in Thai hands.
