Jai Dee Posted May 30, 2007 Share Posted May 30, 2007 Federation of Thai Industries discuss construction of new port in southern provinces The Federation of Thai Industries conducted a brainstorming session to discuss cooperation between the public and private sector in the construction of a new national port. The Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, Mr. Thani Sorat (ธนิต โสรัตน์), reports that his organization recently held a meeting to discuss the construction of a new port on the western seaboard of Thailand to develop the economy of the southern region. Mr. Thani revealed that the public and private sector are collecting input on how to establish the new seaport as a logistic gate way to other nations. The Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries added that the new port will most likely be constructed in Satun province to assist in development of logistics in the southwestern region of Thailand. Whatever happened to that idea a few years ago about building a canal from Ranong to Surat ... something to rival the Suez and Panama? Ooops, I forgot, someone also forgot that there was a mountain range in the middle. Once they build a decent infrastructure including proper highways and rail links it might well be feasible, until then, I'll just wait... patiently.
