Koh Samui is fine if you have young children. I would aim for Maenam though as it is quieter and not full of the 'adult' entertainment establishments, not saying you can't have a good meal and a beer but it's not full of 18 - 20 year olds.

if your not planning on going out so much in the evening then Lamai would be fine as it has all the resteraunts, supermarkets that you might need & also the beach & sea are nicer than at other parts of the island, also good choice of beachside accom to suit all budgets. Bohput is also nice if a bit quiet, not much going on by way of entertainment & the beach is not great & also resteraunts tend to be of a higher price than elsewhere as not much competition & nothing near if have no transport. Meanam is nice but not a lot of anything there just a big road with lots of traffic, beach is ok but not very good water (little dirty) again not many resteraunts if you are looking for variety. Chaweng would be a v bad idea to go with a child, crowded, noisy, lots of night life, overpopulated but good beach, lots of young singles frequent most of the resorts in the mid to lower range & then upper price tend to be very expensive. But all in all, Samui is a very suitable place to bring kids as it has a lot to keep them entertained. If you stay at a resort without a pool, can usually go to another resort with pool & pay 50baht to use it.
