Two locations of Khor Khao Island and Thai Muang National Park, including the Lam Kaen community in the Phang Nga province, were selected by UN WTO to conduct activities on Sustainable Tourism Developemnt for Tsunami affected lcations. The information released on the organization’s official website states that this followed successive surveys and studies. In November 2006 the experts started activities in Thailand including consultations with national and local authorities, talks with international organizations and assessments in the six tsunami affected provinces to identify model areas for implementation of the UNWTO assistance for the re-development of tourism in a sustainable manner. The selection of the model areas was based on specific criteria, the model site has to be a biodiversity rich area affected by the tsunami; and has to allow for local community involvement and participatory processes. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand has set up a committee composed of stakeholders from public and private sectors, while the project office is based in the Provincial Tourism, Sport and Recreation Centre.
