Soldiers take on a teaching role

Soldiers are waging psychological warfare in a school and reaching out

Published on July 28, 2007

Command Sergeant Major Khamleu Kan-rawang of the 17th Infantry Battalion from northern Chiang Rai province has been in a tough position for nine months trying to maintain law and order in the South.

Patrols, gun battles and pursuit of insurgents are normal tasks for him, but teaching school children is new and strange to him.

His 40-man unit moved to secure Ban Talosumae School shortly after it was attacked by arsonists on June 1. A wooden building and two classrooms were completely destroyed.

Children and teachers are worried about new attacks as security volunteers in the village have no capability to protect them.

The arson attack took place during a transition period when a unit of Rangers who previously guarded the school left and the replacement unit had not yet arrived, said the school director Wichai Srithong.

The arsonists attacked when the security volunteers went to pray at a nearby mosque, he said.

The school is located in Yala's Krong Pinang district, which is a violence hotspot in the troubled region. But the situation has been under control since the infantry unit moved in, the school director said.
