The Saturday July 28th false alarm for tsunami warnings, which caused panic and injuries for residents and tourists in various locations of Krabi including the famous Phi Phi and Lanta Islands, prompted the Krabi Governor to lead all responsible personnel on Sunday morning to inspect the cause. The false alarms triggered at 5pm in 12 towers and sounded messages for about 30 minutes while people evacuated to higher ground following evacuation routes. This resulted in at least four tourists being injured. At 5.56 pm, the National Disaster Warning Center or NDWC in Bangkok sent out SMS messages stating that they did not trigger the alarms and that there was no tsunami warning. The Krabi Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office Chief Tha-loeng-sak Pu-wa-yan-pong confirmed that the 12 towers were installed by a private company under the Governor’s CEO’s budget and that they are among 20 that are not yet linked with the NDWC. The private company pledged to take care of the expenses for those injured from the incident, as the false alarm was confirmed to have been caused by the company’s computer stationed in Bangkok.

.....Krabi International Airport, under the Civil Aviation Department, also reported its (first 6 months) figures up to June 2007, with a total of 4,460 aircraft movements or 113% increases over 2006 and even 34% more than 2004, the previous record year. The total numbers of passengers arriving and departing, with no transits, was just over 466,000 or 87% more than 2006, or 239% more than 2004. The total freight showed about 584,000 kilograms in and out, a 36% increase over 2006. Again these are all record highs for Krabi.

.....The Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, which manages Phuket International Airport, have informed Andaman News about their latest record statistics in the first 6 months of the year from January up to June 2007. They showed a total of 19,993 aircraft movements, up 36% from 2006. The numbers of arriving, departing and transit passengers were just over 2.8 million for 6 months, showing increases of 24% compared to the same period last year, which was a previous record year. Even the total freight showed 9,520 tonnes in and out, a 7% increase over 2006. These are therefore the highest ever numbers at Phuket Airport, showing a continuous boom.
