Police Mass Arrests

I think only Bangkok has declared open season on tourists. From the sounds of things in Pattaya and Phuket its so slow that they are more welcoming than usual. Bangkok has a few other income sources to fall back on when they kill the tourist trade, I think Pattaya and Phuket would have a more severe and immediate impact if they pulled the same crazy stunts.

I hear and read the bus loads of tourists are headed to jail for not haveing their passport and long lines for drug tests????  Is this the case in Pattaya and Phuket?

That's nonsense, if you do not carry your passport or any other official ID such as Alien registration Book you can be fined (and brought to the next Police station for identification purposes). That law is nothing new though and since election is coming to Bangkok (not only the Bangkok governor but also the gerneral election in January), things are getting a bit harsh again. But no tourist will be sent to jail for not carrying his passport, in fact, if you carry copies of all relevant pages in your passport it is likely to please the Officers (but don't get nosy with them as they are always right, even if they are not). Drugs tests are a good thing in my opinion as I am not pro drugs. Pattaya and Phulet always had their special status but even in Pattaya Discos get busted and people get tested from time to time

Sounds like a post from a Pattaya/Phuket hotel owner or tour operator

"Mass arrests" "bus loads of tourists" "Jail"

I must be living in the other Bangkok.

I would be more concerned about the daily downpours that police crackdowns right now if I were a tourist

WOOOOOOO!

I concept of random cheching for passports is really something not acceptable in the home land of most visitors. Fined and off the a Jail house for whatever. Not needed! Why don't they go after the people who slip drugs to visitors and steal their passports as way to make it more safe to carry the document! Random Urine Tests......Look the problem with drugs is the plight of the users, those who become victims of drug users and how about the importers. The problem here is that many countries allow different levels of drug use or "refuse to enforce" minor offences. Some countries allow use for medical reasons! So off to Thailand and

you are now a criminal based on a very poor test system. There is something wrong with that and people all over the net are asking about safety in Pattaya and Patong. Patong is screaming to the wee hours and No Police Harrassment of the

Falang! Top wit, not a tour person just asking how is the vibe. Do I have to stand on the steps of the Landmark and whistle to the freelances?

The point is: If you do not like the rules, stay at home. Check the ID rules back home buddy, most european countries and the US require you to carry identification at all times, if you fail to produce ID when requested, you will be brought to the nearest Police station to make identification. And Bangkok is one of the safest cities I came across, safer then some US city and safer then some cities in Europe. And if you do not take drugs, no need to be afraid of drung tests anyway. If you do, you are not exactly a bright individual considering the harsh penalties for drug use or dealing in Thailand (which everybody should know about by now).

I was "stopped", while walking on the street, by an immigration patrol a few nights ago, at about 2am. They requested my passport to check on the visa and asked me "you carry passport?" and i told him "yes of course, you want to check it?" (which was bs, i didn't have it with me) and reached to my pocket. He then said "is ok" and that was it.

Call me smart :o Now of course if he checked i would have been in trouble for not carrying it :D But then again, i had a few extra baht in my pocket. :D

Just don't exaggerate an issue that is due at every election. You seem not to be a permanent resident of Bangkok, otherwhise you would be used to the "election campaigns" of the Bangkok Metropolitan Police :o

And again, the more druggies they lock away, the better for Thailand.

There is only one country where marijuhana is legal in europe and that are the Netherlands. (there are some exceptions for medical conditions but they are rather rare as far as I remember). If you take drugs in Thailand you must have a brain smaller then an atom as by now everybody should be well aware that drug offences are not considered minor here (not only Thailand - ever read the Anti Drug Laws of Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia,...for example?) If you wanna smoke it, or take speed or whatever, do so in you own country if it is tolerated there, it is not tolerated here and we all, being guests in this country, should respect that fact.

I invite you to join me on my next visit to Bang Kwang Prison, you can talk to a few smart asses who thought that a few pills or a few gramms are ok, becuase it would be ok at home too...didn't work the way they thought. If you wanna join me, I go there 1 or 2 times a month, just PM me and we can arrange a meeting and I show you where you end up if you are caught with drugs in Thailand.

Talking about the drugs part, a lot of tourists from UK travel to Bangers Via amsterdam. Amsterdam having a smoke is legal. So just say You stop in Amsterdam a few days before you travel have a smoke then get to Bangers, get tested for drugs. What happens then? How long does it stay in your blood?

What would be the consequences?

Just a thought?

Sorry, I can not answer that question as I am no specialist on drug tests, maybe someone can give a qualified answer to that?

I would just not take the risk, it's not worth it.

That depends on the test. So Some person has a snoot full in Amsterdam and taks a few puffs on the way to Bangers. Well for that he should be in the Bangkok Hilton, NOT!

BTW, the PM would do well with addressing the Human Rights issues in their penal system before America pulls the plug on all the money they get! Don't kid yourself, the real boarder protection for Thailand is funded by the USA. America is traing durg agents at the FBI/DEA school in Langley Va.

Well, as I said, I invite you to contact me and then you can have a look at some of the things you pretend to know but obviously have no clue about. If you are angry at the thai government for some reason, maybe you should consider to spend you valuable holliday time somewhere else?

BTW: America maybe should address its own human rights issues before talking about other countries?

As in any country in the world, you are jeopardizing your stay here if you are stupid enough to use drugs or be illegal with your visa. Want to use drugs? Go to the Nederlands where it's ok or someplace else where it's accepted. Want to mess up with your visa? Smoke another joint and stare at your bedroom ceiling. :o

To come back to the original question. No, Bangkok is not dangerous now.

But let's face it, any action by police back home, I would question and, if necessary sue in court.

In Thailand, people see the police different and obediently follow their instructions.

Now, I do not condone the raid on Q-bar and certainly I am not interested to leave a pint of urin for the enjoyment of the forces. As said before, a raid should only be authorized by court order and search warrant on strong suspicion of wrong doing. Problem seems to be that some ministers or high ranking police officers see it different and love to show their power.

IMHO this is wrong, but contrary to back home, I am not going to take them to

court. Perhaps just carry my passport.

Yeah BKK is extreemly dangerous these days, Public beheadings for not carring your passport. Flogging for failed urine tests. And you really dont wanna know what happens to people who drop ciggy butts on the floor, man, talk about cruelty!

I saw this one guy, musta been 70, walking down the road with his daughter (must have been his daughter, she was a third of his age) the police grabbed him, ruffed him up with stun guns and riot shields, stuck a plastic bullet in his knee cap and then ran off with his wallet.

*Note: the above is completely Fictitious and totaly made up on the spot, it was a form of sarcasm to highlight the fact that the original question was a little silly

Not to mention i've seen a lot of asian-looking people around lately. Something is fishy, i can tell...
