What are the going rates and does anyone possibly know a website with listings. I cant seem to find any that offer housing near there. Highwayman Posted August 24, 2004 Share Posted August 24, 2004 Once you get out of the main westerner areas such as Sukhumvit etc. l really think you're better off just going to the area you're interested in and checking it out yourself, in a taxi or on the back of a motor-cycle. A lot of places will never be advertised with an agent or in the classifieds as the rental is too low to justify the cost of advertising. Owners often just put up signs outside the property or on street lights. That's how we found our last couple of places although we are out past the airport a fair way. If you know some Thai's ask them if they know or have friends in the area. Get them to go with you (for a set fee if need be) as you check out the area. Make sure they have an idea of what you want e.g. kitchen required, if so indoors or is outdoors okay, a/c, parking, security etc.etc. Usually if you ring a number on any of the signs you see you will find the owner lives nearby and will be around to see you asap. stumonster Posted August 25, 2004 Share Posted August 25, 2004 mate you need to go and have a look around yourself, but taking with you someone who reads and speaks thai. there a serveral moo baans across the road from software park down soi 28 and also a very large luxury condo complex you access from a little further up the road.. I live in a moo baan ( gotoemo .sic ) down the end of soi28 and am renting a townhouse, 2 story, for 5k baht per month. I have actually seen a smallish house while I was riding around that has a nice sized yard which looks empty. many of the rentals are just advertised with a sign outside in thai and a phone number. also before you commit check for signs of previous flooding. Highwayman Posted August 25, 2004 Share Posted August 25, 2004 Pretty good l would imagine. Might even struggle to find much in that price range as it would be high for that part of Bangkok imo. Once you get out of areas like Sukhumvit you find just how cheap housing can be. To give you an example, recently l checked out a few houses in the On-Nut area that were renting at 12-15k per month. They were maybe 60% the size of our house out Rangsit way. Out here they would only rent for 3k or less per month to a Thai. We have a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom place, 2 storey with indoor kitchen, garden and car-port for 4.5k. It's about 10-15 years old, nothing fantastic mind you but it's not a dump either, certainly one of the better houses in the immediate area. We looked for something better still but could not even find one property renting for more than 8,000 so we stuck with what we have which even Thai friends say was a very good deal. The owner liked us, we had a good reference and he trusted us to look after it well rather than some other prospective tenants. When you're looking at places see if you can factor any furniture and appliances into the deal if the owner has bought a new place and just wants to rent out his old place as an investment. Accept that you won't get quite as good a deal as a Thai would. If someone is helping you with negotiations then also realise that unless you know them very well that they will be probably be getting a finders fee.
