A&P Bakery has a block of aged Dutch Gouda that is exceptional.

The girls will cut you a piece to suit.

110B a 100gms though, but it is Christmas. :o

Norhern Farm has Gouda Cheese too, as well as the new dairy shop next to Da Vinci.

I was down the 'Farm today.

They have a good selection of cheese and I came away with a piece of NZ Mainland and a large slice of their superb Parmesan.

The little racks of lamb in the freezer really looked tempting.

At 1100 Baht per kg this is a big rip off like many other things in Chiang Rai. There are other choices. Like many other things in Chiang Rai there is not enough competition.

It may be expensive, but really good cheese will cost you that and more in the countries it's made in. Consider it comes from Europe in cold storage and then has to be wholesaled again here.

This is definitely in the better quality range.

Be interested to hear your "other choices".

Yesterday I bought almost a kilo of the Dutch Gouda that is not aged from A&P. 600 bath a kilo is absolute not a rip off! In Sweden that will cost 800-1000 bath a kilo!

Merry Christmas!

I'm afraid you haven't been to the old country for quite some time, Svenivan :D Dutch Gouda is one of the most common promotional items you can find at a Swedish food retailer's. The usual "extrapris" (promotional price) is 39.90 SEK, which is approximately 200 THB/kg. Finding somebody who would charge 800-1000 THB/kg for Gouda (aged or not) would, I am sure, prove almost impossible. This is not to say that I would be unwilling to pay that here in Thailand, I recently paid 880 THB/kg for Dutch Edam here in Chiang Mai :D We are a long way from the pastures of Holland, are we not?

Just a question......

Up there in the North you must have Wholesale Barkery Supply Shops ?? go in and look in the Fridge you maybe amazed at what they have and the price..

Holland Gouda for 420 Baht per kg.

Holland Edam for 410 Baht per kg.

NZ Chedder for 610 Baht per 2 kg Block, this is in the same pack by the same importers as other shops sell for 710 Baht for the Block and one shop I was in a few weeks ago were selling for 880 Baht..

If your have Wholesale Barkery Supply Shops, have a good look around you maybe amazed at what other everyday items you can buy at a fraction of a Supermarkets price + things that you had no idea was even in Thailand.... Note that they sell different thing in different shops, eg: the one in a Village near to me has not Holland cheese, but Italian, and they do not sell mazipan, yet 3 km from this shop they do.

No, you are right. I remember you could not get a decent cheese less than 125 SEK (625 bath).

So that has changed. So what more has changed? You got snow on Christmas in Sweden?

God Jul!

I don't know if there is a wholesale bakery supply shop in CR but in Chiang Mai there is an excellent one on the CM Lamphun road. It is just part the overpass at Hong Noi and next to a Caltex service station. I haven't got a business card for them to give you a name and telephone number but if you are interested I can pop in there to find out. I will also see if 1) they freight to Chiang Rai and 2) they have a supplier up there or know another shop that sells wholesale. I would be surprised if there wasn't in a city the size of Chiang Rai.

No, this is a specialist wholesaler for baking goods. They sell ovens, industrial mixers, and bags of flour etc. The Rimping Supermarket is on the same road but quite a bit closer to town. I agree they don't keep much. They used to have a better selection but over time dropped it, presumably it wasn't a big enough seller to make it worth while.

I stopped eating cheese when I was 18 or 19. A part of my diet as an amateur boxer (yes, I got the license but never did any fights, real hardcore). Anyways, regarding the cheese that we get in Chiang Rai, the ridiculous pricing must be annoying.

As we scandinavians usually eat cheese with bread for breakfast, cheese at lunch, cheese in the night and cheesus, we're flooded by it for cheap money! Why isn't there anyone that has started importing the standard cheese? Buy it for 200 baht a kilo and then sell it here for 400 baht a kilo. Fair price and double profit.

Cheesorama!

No, according to my reports (I'm at home in Chiang Mai enjoying the warmth) the weather in Sweden is the usual for this time of year, i.e. a couple of degrees plus, cloudy and unpleasant... The white Christmas concept seemed to disappear along with my youth!

God Fortsättning och Gott Nytt År!

Imported Holland Gouda and Edam are both available in Chiang Rai at 499 Baht per kg. Check with me if you would like to know where.

Don

OK Don, I am checking with you! Where is Holland Gouda and Edam available at 499 baht per kilo?

The idea with this thread is to tell everyone where to find good cheese at a good price!

So where?

:D:o:D

Additional Information

I went to the Bakery and they have Cheese there, I don't normally eat the stuff so didn't check the prices or types. McG who is a cheese fanatic will be able to fill in the gaps when he goes to suss it out.

The place is Chiang Mai Baker Mart

104/8 Moo 6 Chiang Mai-Lamphun Rd

NongHoi Chiang Mai

phone 053 334111

fax 053 334112

They have staff that speak good English and are most helpful. A very wide range of baking supplies and equipment, including bread and pizza ovens.

I asked and they don't deliver to Chiang Rai nor did they know a similar business up there.

By the rules no commercial activity is permitted on the forum and I have been cautioned. If you can't find the place at Doi Hang. Call me at 081 894 6401.

So where?

:D:o:D

This is correct but probably requires some explanation.

Thai Visa is a commercial forum. The revenue to run it comes from the advertising and consequently the Administration have put into place a rule that commercial advertising in posts is not allowed. However they also recognise that the forum is a source of information and there is quite a lot of allowance made for members to post commercial details about companies they know and are willing to recommend.

In short if a member puts up messages that read "visit the Baan Beautiful Guest house it is very nice and the prices are reasonable" then post the contact details (but please not the eMail address) then we will happily allow it. However if the member puts that message frequently and we find out they own the guest house we will usually refer them to Sales. If they don't take up a sales agreement we will normally edit or delete the message because it is commercial spam. A lot of it comes down to context and this can make it hard for members and moderators to manage. I personally interpret the rules by looking at it in the following way:

1) is the post criticising or countering an existing sponsor?

2) is the post answering a question made by another member?

3) is the member who put up the details a regular and reliable member of the forum?

Looking at, for example the post "where can I get Edam cheese for 300baht per kilo" and some one writes "try Northern Farms" I will have no problems if they put in the address and directions on how to get there.

I realise there are levels of interpretation and that can make it difficult with different mods interpreting the rules but for better or worse this is how I deal with the situation.

If anyone wishes to discuss this further please send me a PM, however I cannot nor will not discuss individual cases where a moderator has made a ruling to allow or delete a post. Each ruling stands on its own merits and frequently has mitigating circumstances.

Hope this helps
