Bomb scare hits Bangkok universities

PATHUM THANI: -- Two universities in the Rangsit suburb of Bangkok broke out in panic yesteday when they received telephoned bomb threats.

But bomb disposal experts failed to find any explosives, and concluded that the threats had been made by pranksters.

Students and staff at Bangkok University were carrying on with their normal business this morning when a phone call came in warning that a bomb had been placed in the university library. Staff immediately called out the police, who evacuated the university’s 20,000 staff and students, before calling in bomb disposal experts.

But University Dean Dr. Thanu Kulathol revealed afterwards that the bomb disposal squad had failed to find any evidence of explosives, and that the threat had almost certainly been a hoax. The university, he said, would open as normal tomorrow.

A similar phone call was apparently received by the Rangsit campus of Thammasat University, where the caller claimed to have placed explosives at the sports stadium.

Pol. Lt. Col. Wichien Muensuwann, investigative superintendent at Klong Luang police station, said that the hoax caller appeared to have been a young man from the southern region.
