gomangosteen
A photo, and a little history: “We are going to attack Chantaburi tonight. Destroy all the food and utensils we have, for we will have our food in Chantaburi tomorrow morning.” This quote was made by King Taksin the Great on the night of June 15, 1767 before he and his soldiers made an attack. After they successfully took control of Chanthaburi, it was here at the present day King Taksin Camp where he raised his army to later fight and win back the country from the Burmese invaders. In 1893, after years of abandonment, this camp was used again by the French Army occupying Chanthaburi while forcing Thailand to give up the land next to the two countries. Although the Taksin camp is now used as a base for the Royal Thai Marine Corps, the evidence and remnants of the past still remain - from the old city wall to the area where Prince Tak’s troop destroyed all their pots and pans, to the French-styled buildings constructed during the 10 years that they were here. Popular Post gomangosteen
Rest stop at Laem Sing beach Chanthaburi, on my favourite 56km loop ride from Tha Mai through Chan city, Laem Sing for a meal break before the last 21km home, or have a longer option thru Chao Lao, takes it up to just over 70km. Once past Chan city it's quiet riding, rural roads till this section of the coast highway which has marked cycle lanes

Popular Post gomangosteen
Moored on the Chanthaburi River at Samet Ngam, the WWII British navy minesweeper HMS Minstrel, later HTMS Phosamton, appears to have taken on water and settled on the riverbed. Restoration has been abandoned, this was a project funded by our previous government in 2011, not a priority for the current administration Edited May 9, 2017 by gomangosteen

Popular Post gomangosteen
Khung Krabaen Non-Hunting area on the Chanthaburi coast, conservation reserve on north side of Paknam Khaem Nu bridge. The road follows the coast through the trees, over a short steep hill and a slower incline to the southern end of Chao Lao beach There is a public campground, tent areas plus bungalows available to rent This second photo not mine, a drone pic gives a good perspective of the road through the trees. To the right the bridge and fishing village at Paknam Khaem Nu; over the hill to the left is the southern end of Chao Lao beach

gomangosteen
East of Soi Dao in Chanthaburi province, limestone hills along the border with Cambodia Driving from Watthana Nakhon in Sa Kaeo, this route south to Chanthaburi is an alternative to the main highway 317. A little longer, slower, but more scenic and little traffic, favoured by touring cyclists for traffic, less hills too
