Chastity goes out the window in Thailand

BANGKOK: -- Thai teenagers' chaste reputation has gone out of the window with more than half of Bangkok youths believing that pre-marital sex is no longer taboo, poll results showed on Sunday.

Public displays of affection among teenagers are virtually the norm now in the once-staid Thai capital as youths - bombarded by erotic marketing, racy television and a more liberal attitude - come to see sex as fashionable, the survey showed.

Of the 417 teenage high school students in Bangkok polled by Rajabhat Suan Dusit University this month, 51,3 percent said underage or pre-marital sex was now acceptable, while a full 92,81 percent said teenagers should be able to express their love in private.

Only 1,12 percent said no affection should be displayed in public, while 78,88 percent said holding hands was the extent teens could go to in expressing their love publicly. Kissing or hugging was the limit for 17,53 percent.

'The institution of the family has also failed dismally'

In a worrying trend, however, the largest single reason for why students expressed their love in public, totalling 36.11 percent of respondents, was "following the trend".

The poll did not report figures for how many of the teens actually engaged in sex, nor did it report any trends comparing the results with previous years or generations.

Conservatives condemned the findings, with one prominent senator reportedly pinning the lapse in student modesty on Western influences glorified by the Thai media.

"The institution of the family has also failed dismally," Senator Rabiabrat Pongpanitch told the Nation newspaper. "Familes are no longer capable of providing a balance, resulting in drastic changes in teenage sexual behaviour."

She said most married couples today work for a living and the traditional bonds between parents and children have been strained.

Research by the health ministry and cited in The Nation showed that 18 percent of students in Thai cities lose their virginity between the ages of 12 and 15.

Yes, blame everything on the falangs, how about HIV, chicken flu and all the fighting in the south, were we the cause of all that.

I had a (non-bar) Thai girlfriend some time ago, she worked with the local government as an accountant. Her (male) co-workers, who knew that her boyfriend was 'farang' teased her (just to name one example) with "Farang have Aids..." :o

And this was not in the mid eighties, but five years ago (when the HIV/Aids rate in Thailand was probably already higher than in most western countries)!

What Thailand has lost over the last seven or ten years (I can just talk about this time span) is not (only) moral, but friendliness, tolerance towards other cultures, and the (then) typical Thai smile... (Instead the people of Thailand got an ultra-nationalist government, which tries to hide incompetence and corruption by pointing the finger at the 'farang' for all of its own failures...)

I really hope that over time more and more Thais will understand, that many 'farang' love and value this country and its people more than self-proclaimed 'Thai raks'...

Where did they get the idea about no sex before marriage?

Is there another Thailand that I have not visited yet?

How about some statistics on how many Thais get married?

I mean legally married, not just the monk bit.

My guess is quite a low percentage, which makes a mockery of the whole report given here.

about a year ago, an 11 year old at a private (thai) school here in the western central provinces experimented with his 11 year old class mate and got her pregnant. They are now both out of school, had a temple ceremony, and he the boy is being encouraged to support his wife (!) by working with his father.

That was at a neighbouring school.

Mine is an all girls school.

During a Dictation I intercepted a plastic bag being passed from one 12 year old to another. 12 years old!!!!

I found 6 VCD´s (copied) all pornographic. The underground ones they make in BKK. teenagers and 20 somethings getting it from thai guys in hotel rooms.

When her Homeroom teacher concluded her questioning, it turned out she was selling them to the girls at my school for a boy at an all boys school down the road - her brother! The teacher decided to let sleeping dogs lie rather than make probs for the kids. Don´t blame her, upon reflection. TIT after all.

Should´ve kept them :o

Good. now maybe we can finally get back to the good old days of purchasing 3 or 4 12-year old wives to keep the rod and the house straight. Who in heck got em started on all this monogamy fodder anyhow? In the immortal words of the great Jerry Lee Lewis, "It's best to get 'em young. That way you can train 'em like a good coon hound."

So much for compulsory schooling until 15,

No marriage under??

Intercourse with a girl under 15 is rape...

Need I go on?

Where were the social do gooders and the NGO's.

Too busy getting their names and photos in the newspaper?
