Lip Reading

Does anybody out there know if it is possible to lip read Thai? I see many Thai's using sign language, but with Thai being a tonal language is it possible to lip read? i.e the word "mai" has different meanings depending upon tone, this must make it difficult to lip read or do the Thai's take into account the context of the sentence and take it from there?

The last I heard about lip reading in general is that it is discredited these days as in impractical method of communication... So many more things are involved in forming words than just the lips.

Also, I would guess that the phonemic tones of Thai should make it even more impractical to lipread. But this is just my own musings.
