haroldc
Just a question for any F&B people out there - why is the price of imported cheese in Thailand 3-4 times the price in Vietnam or Cambodia? (I'm on a limited budget, and cheese is one of the things I miss the most - I just can't afford it!)
bsided69
Just a question for any F&B people out there - why is the price of imported cheese in Thailand 3-4 times the price in Vietnam or Cambodia? (I'm on a limited budget, and cheese is one of the things I miss the most - I just can't afford it!) Oh Gosh I feel your gonna get it from the old farts brigade. The words there, go and then come to mind. Your so right about the prices though and there going up all the time. Am quite sure it is the import tax that makes it so expensive. Im OK as I quite like the Anchor cheese that is available almost everywhere in CM. Similar price as back in England though. There a few great Delis here in CM where you can go and purchase small peices of many varietys of cheese and have a cheese feast every now and again if you like. I do beleave the Old Bell has a great cheese selction as well. Not sure where your from but good luck in your quest for cheese. bob4you
I think the import tax excuse is a bunch of BS on the part of the wholesalers and retailers. the duty or tax is not 200% is it? Same thing applies to alcohol.
haroldc
I think the import tax excuse is a bunch of BS on the part of the wholesalers and retailers. the duty or tax is not 200% is it? Same thing applies to alcohol. To the best of my knowledge, the duty on cheese is 30% and there is no excise tax. Don't know the rates for alcohol, but there definitely is excise tax on top of the duty. (And there's 7% VAT on the landed price -- including duty and excise tax -- of everything.) Also, went to TOPS today and saw a sign that basically said "sorry, promotions and discounts on wine are no longer legal." That means I'm going to have to cut my wine purchases from 4 to 2 bottles a month. Sigh...

Briggsy
The cheese mafia. You think I'm joking, don't you? Look at it this way. Who imports cheese into Thailand? What happens if somebody else tries to import cheese into Thailand? Will anybody dare to challenge them? Will the newcomers get an import licence? Will they get the necessary documents from the FDA? Will their consignments be held up at Customs? Will they receive surprise audits from the Revenue Department? There are many ways to effectively maintain a monopoly in a non-transparent economy. Or failing that, create a price-fixing cartel and carve up the market with your 'competitors'. You would be surprised to find how many sectors of the economy are effective monopolies. There is some local cheese produced. It's not a bargain when you consider the cost and the quality.

Briggsy
Excellent, Thaigerd, you are perfectly placed to answer the OP's question? Also have you managed to get your cheeses sold in the big supermarkets and if so, in a significant number of branches? Who is really profiting? Who is supplying imported cheese to the Tesco Lotus, Tops, Villa etc? Where are the mark-ups? I also am a cheese fan. I would like to know who the big cheese is behind cheese in Thailand. I am convinced there is a low-profile but very wealthy Sino-Thai family with a 7-syllable surname like Phattanaphanichcheesekul who has the bulk of the imported cheese market sown up. Thus keeping prices high. It's high time the imported cheese sector was opened up to real competition to benefit the consumer. Smash the cheese monopoly. Maestro
To the best of my knowledge, the duty on cheese is 30% and there is no excise tax. Apparently, it is 60%, and that's on landed cost. Consider that it is probably shipped by air. Source: http://www.customs.go.th/Tariff/TariffCat....;keyword=cheese thaigerd will probably have up-to-date information if it has changed. And he is right: there is no "mafia". Importing cheese is no different from importing nails or cosmetics, with the only special requirement that you have to comply with the simple and straightforward food labelling regulations. You have to calculate a higher percentage of spoilage than for nails, though. Anybody can import food, and there must be hundreds of food importers in Thailand, including many cheese importers. -- Maestro

lomatopo
Domestic cheese prices have been affected by the nearly doubling in whole milk wholesale prices in the last year. Imported cheese needs to be air-freighted, and has handling and storage requirements which add to the local price. Not sure what the associated import duties, taxes and fees are but suspect they are on the high side in part to protect the domestic industry. Wine and spirits imported into Thailand face astronomically high duties and taxes. While the import duty on these products is a bit under 60% ad valorem, there is an excise tax that takes into account the amount of import duty paid. The effective tax rate on wine (including both import duties and excise taxes) is around 300%.

cathyy
Also, cheese is very much a specialty item here, primarily for farangs, since most Thais are lactose intolerant. Before you tell me about your kids, nieces, and nephews all loving dairy, please be aware that lactose intolerance develops only after the age of 8 or so. They may consider a tummy ache not a deterrent to the occasional ice cream cone, if they have even connected the tummy ache with dairy intake. I've met adult Thais who did not know what lactose intolerant was, but did admit to getting an upset stomach after eating dairy products. When I explained it to them, they were quite surprised. madjbs
Asking again -- is it possible for individuals to order cheese from your company? If so, how does one do it, is there a minimum order quantity or baht amount, how would one actually get the cheese, etc.? And again..........
