george Posted October 8, 2004 Share Posted October 8, 2004 Over 20 areas in Phuket at risk of landslides PHUKET: -- Thailand's southern resort province of Phuket has been facing torrential rain over the past days, causing over 20 areas having been at risk of landslides, according to a senior provincial official. The province's deputy governor, Mr. Pongphao Ketthong, told TNA today that he had sent officials to inspect the places, and had ordered a 24-hour surveillance of the spots at risk. "The torrential rain over the past days has prompted us to be well-prepared for both flash floods and possible landslides, particularly the over 20 areas at risk", he said. Landslides have been reported in many areas in Phuket during the rainy season over the past years due to illegal housing and resurfacing of land on higher areas by local residents, according to Mr. Pongphao. --TNA 2004-10-09 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

LadyinRed Posted October 13, 2004 Share Posted October 13, 2004 I hate to think like this, but I have a feeling this landslide problem could get worse. Thais are selling lands in a frenzy nowadays, they chop all the trees down, fence or barricade their plot for prospective buyers to view. sonthaya Posted October 25, 2004 Share Posted October 25, 2004 Just back from a one month stay in Phuket Palace Resort on Patong Beach, we are right next to the Simon Cabaret, just across the road there were several mudslides during the heavy rain during late September and early October, it stopped traffic completely on the road between Patong and Karon beach, heavy equipment was needed to clear the road again.
